If you were riding the brakes previous, it may be brake fade, of I've also heard if the handbrake is adjusted too tight, it created excessive heat which can cause brake fade also. Brake fade is where the pads create a gas between the pad and rotor, meaning there is no friction to cause you to stop, slow down. I would get the pads replaced and machine rotors with good quality pads like bendix ultimate
I had the same thing happen New years day. Merging into traffic the car infront of me slammed on breaks as did I at about 10-15km and the car did nothing but lock up and shutter at the same speed straight into the ass of the car infront. I've brought my problem down to Warped rotors. Bought brand newies and pads to change over once car gets back from shop. If anyone has any other solutions would love to hear them also as my old 1986 4Runner would of stopped within that distance at the speed no problem!
You drive a FORD? That's O.K we all make mistakes..
If you find the Rotors are warped and would rather change them all over plus the 8 new pads I asked around all over Ebay and got this deal sorted and cheapest by $100:

I would be paying a bit more for my brakes as they are the only thing stopping me!!
My opinion is get the best pads you can get and also some slotted rotors, while your at it get braided lines as well (although there not really needed).

If your tyres and suspension are flogged out the tyres were probably skipping on and off the road causing the abs to keep pulling braking force away to try and regain traction. Much like trying to stop a 4wd with ABS on sand, it wont stop at all.
Brake fade I doubt unless you had just been beating up on the brakes, warped rotors wont stop the brakes working either. Failed master cylinder would stay failed, not come good again.
Silver Certified.
ABS doesnt work by stopping braking altogether. Take it to someone that isnt an idiot.

When you brake hard the brakes will pulse on and off quickly rather than just locking up. The car should still pull up very quickly.

abs is designed to pulse your brakes so you still can steer around obstacles( people), with locked up brakes you have no steering ability,
,,nothing wrong with the car but the operator, too close/day dreaming.. slighty warped discs will still stop all day,, but when apllying the brakes the sterring wheel will shudder.. brake fade??? maybe but only when youve been using the brakes for heavy towing.. master cylinder if ####ed will stay ####ed,, so your answer too this question ,, operator ereor,,, part off life ... just be gratefull no kids where hurt in this life lesson. and yes i hate people who ride up my arse, normally see them shit when you turn your tail lights on, that wakes the ####ers up![]()
now now ladies, finz, if you were too close like you stated, then i dont think it was any braking component. im sure 99% of people have been too close once in there life, you just paid the price. No one hurt, except pride. All good!
