my car had a similar problem, except it seemed to lag at higher revs, i changed the spark plugs, cleaned the throttle body and intake manifold (both were pretty dirty with a gummy residue, a lot dirtier than i expected) with throttle body cleaner (works really well!!), it took a couple of hours of work but the lag went away and the throttle response was ALOT better. Hope this helps.

Your mechanic is a wank if he said your leads are fine... the coil packs sit on top of the spark plugs no need for a lead between the coil pack and spark plugs.

OP, if you have a cut out (miss) its going to be fuel, air or spark related. Pull your plugs and have a look at them. If they are fouled, replace them. If one is different to the others, it could be a fouled plug or coil related. While your there as mentioned above, give the air intake components a clean. CRC elec component spray is good for the maf, degreaser and WD-40 for the TB.
