    Default timing chain covers

i dont know a terrible amount about commodores as you can probably figure out from my previous posts but are the front timing chain covers/gaskets part of the vacume seal or do they have nothing to do with it? meaning is it sealed before the covers

    Thanks

Not sure what you mean? The intake manifold? If so its separately sealed.

the timing chain cover has nothing to do with the vacuum of the intake part of the car. it has gaskets yes, but thats to stop oil from coming out.

sorry about that, nah not the air intake manifold. Its the cover at the front when facing the motor. I think there are two timing chains forming a "V" running off the main crank???

What i meant about the vacume was that if there was an air leak there would it affect performance.

If none of this made sense ill post a pic of what im trying to explain

Oh ok, with the oil i'm not noticing much if any loss on the dipstick so i assume now its more of a seep than a gushing leak. Should i be concerned with this yet or should i wait till it pours out and then replace the gaskets $$$$$$$$$$$$

If the timing cover was leaking you would have oil coming out at the leak. This is a common issue and they leak near the alternator normally.

They dont have gaskets as such, they have a liquid sealant that seals it.

And no it wouldnt affect performance unless all the oil leaked out and the engine siezed

If it isnt leaving puddles of oil on the driveway you can leave it for now. Its an expensive exercise to reseal the cover, mainly labour removing everything to get the cover off then refitting.

Ok cool thanks for that and yes it is coming from directly above the alternator

there are 3 chains on the alloytec, there in not 'vacuum' in there as such, but it needs to be somewhat air tight, if not the galleys will spill, possibly not lubricating correctly. Thats the only way i see it affecting peformance

if i'm not loosing noticable amounts of oil it mustn't be to bad then, ill have to keep an eye on it though. But i was hoping someone would say its going to give you all kinds of trouble as my car intermittently runs like crap but the other times its great. I'm trying to trouble shoot it but i'm not having much luck, ill have to keep going

Nip up the timing cover bolts in the area its leaking, might help a bit. Just be careful not to over tighten them or they can snap.

should i use a torque wrench, and if so do you know the correct setting or do i just see if any are loose?

i was even thinking of cleaning it and sealing it somehow with something. Not sure if it will work yet but looking into it

Just apply a bit of force to make sure they arent loose.

The correct way if youve completely removed the bolts is:

Tighten the bolts a first pass in sequence to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).
Tighten the bolts a second pass in sequence an additional 60 degrees

Probably wont succeed in sealing it without removing it and doing it properly.

ok will do thanks for the info.

Also regarding correct torque settings, with the oil filter cap does it matter if its not tightened to the correct settings or is "as tight as you can go without stripping it" good enough

Doesnt need to be very tight at all. Basically once it locks up just nip it a bit more and thats it.

Over tightening makes it a complete bastard to get off next time.

Whenever you are given a torque then a degree extra, take notice of the force you are applying, if for any reason it requires more torque than necessary to achieve the degree turn, you may snap the bolt.
