Question OBD2 ScanTool

Hey guys,

I've been looking around at what's available out there in the way of OBD2 Scanners. The Scantool unit looks to be okay, but I am having some trouble trying to determine the protocol that is being used in the VZ SV6.

There is an OBD2 (Type A) DLC under the dash, which has the following pins showing:

4,5,6,7,9,12,14 & 16

From the documentation I've found on the scantool site http://www.scantool.net/ this could either be ISO or CAN protocol.

Has anyone managed to get a definitive answer as to which protocol is used in this model vehicle? Is anyone currently using a Scantool OBD2 scanner or any other scanner, what are your experiences? Is anyone aware of any CAN compatible scanners out there in the market place?

Thanks in advance for any information!

Gryph.

See DIY: ECU Scantools/Data Cables . To the best of my knowledge The V6's don't speak OBD. But the 8192 baud like the VT's. The problem is there is nothing available to read it.

However, *IF* it is OBDII I'd put my money on the newer CAN protocol as the other GM's use the VPW protocol (like the GENIII), making the ISO unlikely.

So what info can you get out of the CAN interface? Is it the same as the GEN III VPW data?

Thanks guys. That confirms what a Holden Tech has told me, there is both CAN bus and UART 8192 on the DLC. The CAN part of the pin outs supply engine info, I am yet to find out what the UART does. Apparently there will be a CAN version of Elmscan (the scantool product) available mid December so I'm guessing as long as the cable only uses the CAN pins it should work fine.

For anyone else interested in this there is heaps of info on the following two sites:

http://www.obdii.com
http://www.scantool.net

The UART is as best I know where the likes of Rob work their magic to remap the engine. With regards to the elm chips I make the VPW (GENIII) cable using the elm322. I have looked at the elm can chip, do you know of any software that will run with it?

Mike

EDIT: So I assume that the alloytech V6 runs CAN? Does the LS1/GENIII still run VPW, I seen no reason why it would change. And the any idea what the up comming GENIV will run?

Digimoto don't have the elm327 (the can chip) on their free version yet. ScanMaster do have it on their demo, I do not know what limitations the demo program has but it might be worth a look.

Take a look at http://www.wgsoft.de/

I have finished my usb->elm327 design so I don't think that it would take too much effort to build.

lhe ls2 uses can as well, & its different to vpw
the uart is the primary comms network in the car, can data is converted by the PIM.

I was under the assumption that the elm chips converted the incoming data to a generic RS232 output so that the same software should work across the board. Is this not the case? There are quite a number of free and non-free OBDII apps listed here:

P.S. I placed my order for an Elmscan5 today, I probably won't get it till early January, but will post my feedback on the device here when I do.
