the Haynes book says the timing covers have to be removed to drop the sump but looking at the underside that doesn't seem right. I just spent all night getting to the valves I'd love to not have to pull apart the front of the engine as well.

I was just planning to jack the engine from the trans, not bothering with lowering the kbar. Will that work?

Weather you actually need to or not, I'd be removing the timing cover and near everything I can to clean it out properly.

+1.
but it's a slippery slope.. now you have got in that far do you do the thermostat? & if you take off the timing cover do you do the timing chains & waterpump? & if you take off the sump do you do oil pump? if i were keeping it i would, but looking at that pic i would be running from it.
all the best mate

Bad sludge indeed.
Can you tell us how often the oil and filter were changed, and what oil was used please? I would hate mine to get like that, so I'm interested in learning.

Holy mackerel, there is some sludge in there, how many km's are on the motor or has it not been serviced regularly?
