2004 VZ Executive Wagon
Over the past few months, I've noticed a rattle coming from the engine, and is getting worse and worse. I had an extra oil change done, and they threw some stuff through it that is meant to fix lifter noise. That didn't help.

I took it to a local mechanic today, and then to a Holden Dealer. The mechanic seems to think it sounds like a timing chain, and dealer said possibly big end bearing or piston slap.

I have not been able to get a video as yet, but it can only be heard as you are accelerating under light to medium load, from 1,500 rpm through to 3,000rpm. It seems to be heard more once the engine is warm.

Car is a 2004 VZ Executive wagon. Almost 200,000km on the clock. I bought it just over 18 months ago with 140,000km on it. Oil change done every 10,000km. Always treat it nice when it is cold.

Any ideas what it could be, or what to try next?

Id say would be the timing chain on its way out they usually start to go at about the 200k mark, my mates ones on its way out he has 206k on the clock, holden quoted $2800 to change them, but we are gonna do it ourselves, pain in the ass of a job tho..
You can get holden to do a error code test on it to see if the chain is on its way out mate had this done aswell with a whole car check for $150.

I took it to a Holden specialist today (not a dealer, a company that has been doing Holdens for 30 years). There are a couple of noises it is making, there is chain noise through the rev range (which he said isn't a major problem), and Bearing noise as you go on and off the throttle. He said it should last at least another 50 - 60,000km if treated nice. A lot better news than I got from the dealer, even if it does mean I have to spend a bit of money next year. the dealer wanted 10k+ just to pull it apart to see what was wrong, or 6k for a 2nd hand engine.

May still look at those options, but can get it done a lot cheaper.

second hand motor here is about $1500 to $1800 if low km motor.

Sounds like your bottom end bearings are going out. Very common problem...

Hi cj_nz

What's your engine number and build date?
