scan tool doesnt pick up engine and box

I have an 2005 vz commodore alloytec motor duel fuel got 205000ks it is missing, so needs a ignition coil, but when we put scan tool on to find out which cylinder is missing scan tool won't let us in to the engine and gearbox component, any ideas why? Any help is greatly appreciated thanks

what scan tool, are you sure its a coil, not the plug
