Some extra notes:
No need to replace the seal in the transmission if it still feels soft.
Keep the plastic spacer from your old filter as your new one may not come with one.
Reuse the metal gasket if the transmission has one.
Use synthetic Dex III or Dex VI to refill.

Depending on the condition of the existing fluid, consider flushing out transmission until clean.
Also consider fitting an external transmission cooler if you are keeping the car.

@Gatier where are these images from, is it Gregory's ?

I ask because I am looking for my filler hole it's on the other side and it's not a nut or bolt like in the diagram ( 1 )
It's more like the drain plug, I cant remember what they are called. EDIT. From another thread it's a t40 torxbit

These transmissions (5L40e) are used in a number of BMWs and the consensus in the BMW forums is to use DEX VI.
The service manual, and my Adventra handbook says DEX III. However, DEX VI is DEX III compliant so just go with DEX VI.
If you are going to use DEX III then make sure it is fully synthetic. Those boxes work hard in a Commodore as they are lighter duty than the old 4L60e.

IMHO an additional transmission cooler is more important and a must for the 5L40e if you want keep it.

I appreciate it, where is this from though?
I can not believe that I should be using DEX III in my 2005 SV6 trans, everything I have ever heard even from trans speciailist is it must use DEX VI?
