holden vz thunder ute 2006
Hi i have a 2006 vz thunder ute manual alloytec, the past few months every so often car will crank then partially start (cough and splatter then stop) and then i will turn the key again and starts like nothing has happened. It wont do this again until i let it sit for about 5 hours or more and then it may do the same thing (half start) or it will just start normal?.... Car also runs and idles perfect. any ideas?
Engine Mods: cpr6 intake, pod filter, 2 1/2 inch exhaust with hot dogs - only ever ran 98octane

If a member of the NRMA, take it to them and arrange a diagnostic (members service) for a nominal fee OR have a Mobile Patrol call at your location for a preliminary assessment. Good luck.

Sorry not to have offered any specific advice however your problem may be electrical related, fuel related or mechanical (sensor etc). very difficult to guess.

Check your fuel trims with an OBD reader, as the ECU runs in closed loop (which means it uses the long term trims) when cold starting. I've had 2 startups like this recently and noticed my long term fuel trims were very negative (-17 and -14%). I've done a lot of highway lately and I think the OTR at high speed makes the ECU think there's more air coming in than there's actually is. More air, more fuel but O2 sensors tell there's something wrong so it's trying to lean it out all the time. Apart from that, it runs like a charm. I think a tune is in order for me.
