Strong engine vibrations when car is stationary

Hi all,

I have an auto VZ, it's done about 120,000km so it's not exactly a young car, but it's been pretty robust throughout the last 6-7 years that I've had it.

Recently I have noticed that when the engine is running and the car is stationary, there are occasional jolts or vibrations that are quite strong, enough for someone in my car to ask me once why my car was shaking. It's not a steady vibration, but more like a strong jolt every 3-5 seconds.

Does anyone know what the issue is and how it can be resolved?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

in gear?

what about in Park or Neutral, does it stay there if you give it steadily more revs?

Could be a miss.

I would look at coils first.
Remove each coil connector in order and see if the vibration/miss changes.
Of course could be plugs but coils are easiest to test first.

Yes, both in Drive and in Park. I haven't tried Neutral yet.

I see...is this something I can do or do I require a mechanic?

If you don't know what the coils are then yup, off to the mechanics.

If the Harmonic Balancer is on the way out it can result in loud knocking noise(s) and shaking of the engine (car would also probably shake too). Might be worth having a look at whilst trying to find the likely cause. Good luck.

Does it drive normally? Only rough at idle? If so could be a split in the fuel vapor return pipe... I spent ages chasing that problem...
