I plan to remove the head unit. It is a factory fitted. I have the radio code. How long before I should have to worry about needing the code. Is it a matter of minutes, seconds etc. Any input from you knowledgeable lot would be appreciated.

As soon as power is disconnected you will need the code.

I've had mine out numerous times for short periods and never needed the code when put back in.
The only time I needed the code was when I disconnected the battery before going OS for a while.

Had a few VZ's now where I have not needed the code for the radio after changing batteries.
I think you may be able to disarm the code through the computer or mode buttons.

In my old VT any time it lost power, needed the code.

In my VY and VZ have had battery disconnected a few times while doing work, so like hour or 2 and never needed code.

what I want to know is who in the world would ever steal these crappy stereos - they should never have had the stupid codes in the first place. :)

If I was you I'd assume immediately, you do have the code right?

Have never needed to enter the radio code when the battery has been disconnected or head unit removed while working on my VZ Tonner.
I've even had my factory head unit out overnight before when I was installing my new gauges & gauge pod and it got a bit late, so I just crashed out and finished the install the next morning. Even after being disconnected overnight, I just refitted the head unit when I was done, turned it on and it had kept all my radio station settings too.

The missus old VX sedan would need the security code every time the battery was disconnected.

VY VZ don't need the code unless the radio is from a different car....
It is stored in the BCM for posterity...

Thanks for all those who responded. A mixed bag of answers some suggesting that I may be able to remove item for 5 - 10 minutes without having to retrieve the code.
