Hey all need abit of help I have a vz ute v6. Power steering has never been great but recently it's gotten worse and the steering wheel started groaning and doesn't return to centre after turning. Had a shop look at it for free. They told me pump was shot and needed new strut bearings. So I replaced the pump on the weekend $320 bucks later. It's alittle but better but still stiff and does not return. Could this be strut bearings restricting it or is the rack shot aswell? Also could the groaning and creacking be the clock spring in the steering column?

They do have a bit of a groan especially when the car is sitting still and you turn the wheels
and you are taxing the pump ..the strut bearings would have to be seized pretty hardcore to affect the steering..you could probably jack front of the car up and see if anything changes turning from lock to lock. Wheel alignment and tyre pressures also make a lot of difference....are the tyres wearing evenly?

Any half decent Suspension Specialist should be able to easily identify any problem(s) for you. Cheers. Sounds to me like either suspension (in a real bad way) or Steering Rack has not been maintained. e.g. rubber boots on end have been torn and not replaced allowing entry of water etc.

you could jack the car up and undo the big nut on the strut on the top mounts of the suspension where it goes through the towers and let it drop enough for it to come away from the ribbed rubber mount underneath and see if you can hand turn the bearing supports to see how bad they are..they should turn pretty easy without grinding or binding....the ones in my vz had just started to pit after 180 km use and had rusted the balls/race enough to discolour the grease.
