G'day all,
I know a few months back a thread already went around in regards to painted engine covers and after seeing vzsv6's covers it inspired me to have a go at mine. They came up a treat and after seeing mine, my brother insisted I do his on his VZ SS. I got all the supplies from supercheap auto.
Instructions (this was just what i did, i am not a spraypainter by trade so I am sure that there is a more correct way)
1. clean covers with wax and grease remover (brand was septone)
2. spray covers with plastic primer (brand was powerplus)
3. sprayed allotec insignia silver and resprayed silver highlights - 2 coats(brand was powerplus)
4. masked off silver highlights and sprayed remaining area with red paint - 4 coats (brand was powerplus)
In between coats i lighlty sanded with fine grade paper.
I am happy with the results and so far (about 2 months) the paint has not faded or cracked.

just pull the covers' up and they will come off.
Hmm looks awesome. Think Blue/Black would look gr8
The covers look great. I hate to put a damping on the thread but research i've completed into heat loss and heat transfer on the alluminium intake clearly showed that by taking the covers off it will reduce the temp by up to 25% when idle and nearly 20% when cruise'n at 60kms. I would like to see someone modify one to let air circulate better under or through the covers.
Once again sorry for the bad news.... looks good though!
i have tried both ways i have not noticed any dramatic loss of power of fuel cosumption. i had mine of for 2 months could not tell the difference. maybe cause of the growler kitOriginally Posted by DA_VZ_UTE

I like this way for the covers, maybe get the rocker covers hpc coated,a lot of heat does come from there.
[QUOTE=brettsv6]Nice covers... the vents at the front are a good idea and surely would help with heat transfer. The intake i tested was on a 175 with no coating. I've noticed the 190 has a coating and that might help as well... I'm thinking of insulating my intake completly and redoing the test and see was temps i get then.Originally Posted by DA_VZ_UTE
I dont believe that by insulating the intake that i will notice any performance gains, but i do intend to do other work to the engine (ie supercharge, CAI and exstractors) and i believe that in the long run my engine will be better off with out the excess heat absorbtion.![]()
Hey Walks-SV6,
Where did your strut brace come from, it looks like a genuine part?
Is it from the SS?
Rod
you can get strut braces to suit all vy/vz models genuine from holden for $50
and it only take abou 5 mins to install

Is there any way to paint the plennum?
And would painter's tape be fine to cover the highlights? e.g. the six horisontal pieces

[QUOTE=sting ls2;299709]where can i get a set of these?Originally Posted by DA_VZ_UTE
The most heat conducts from the engine block, mace manifold insulators fix that, but because they are 12mm thick, you usually get rid of the engine covers. I guess it depends if you like to look at your engine or use it.

give everything a spray with wd40 wheels brakes that should fix the squeaks
Ive got just a general question here. I noticed some VZ upper intakes are black and others are jst bare metal (like mine) are ppl painting the plenums black or is this a factory thing on only some of them. My VZ Calais has the 190. Whats the dealio?
its a Factory air intake manifold, and if its a 190 it should be black i believe, mine is black and so are other sv6 and Calais owners. only reason i can think of is that yours has been swapped or i am infact wrong and some 190 motors did come bare metal intake like the 175kw version. or at the worst its a executive fitted with a Calais body kit. Check your ID tags. doubt it though.
after i think it was jan/feb 05 a few changes were made on the 190 motors, the plenum colour was one of them...no biggie
Chev badges are an instant fail
i done the same sorta painting to my vz ssz they came up pretty sic i just used high temp engine enamel and alot of masking tape haha worth it but i reckon![]()
@ SV6 P-Plater I was going to say: Perhaps its the VE Series or something that has different colors between the 190 and 175 (LY7 and LE0) but another dude above this post I think hit it on the head when he said that on a certain date a whole bunch of changes where made including colors and what not upper intake. Anyway. I intend on painting mine someday. I think I will go Black, but i am considering Green or Red, prolly red as red goes well with silver and / or black colors, which is predominant in my engine bay.
I have the LY7 (190) here is two pics. One of the Upper intake, and one of the Compliance plate thingimajigami. Image shack has split my Calais photos into two albums. ill figure it out one day when I have more time. But until then Feel free to look at other pics of my baby here: ImageShack Album - 14 images and http://imageshack.us/g/251/dsc1076nr.jpg/
have a nice day everybody
