Hi all. can any of you tell me how long the (Victorian) Police keep a car for before they sell them at auction? I will be in the market to buy an SS but I thought I might waith and get a new VZ when they become available. Is there a certain km range they go by or period of time?
I could buy a used one at the end of the year but I would like to get the x police as they have the extra stuff in them plus I want the extra wiring harness for some other gear I have to put in there too!!!
Any ideas...
Thanks all.
Brett
I'm not too sure but I thought they kept them till 40,000 k's...?
Yep thats what i heard tooI'm not too sure but I thought they kept them till 40,000 k's...?
Thats all right, thats ok, I drive a commodore anyway!!!!
Info from an old Herald Sun Car's guide.
40,000ks for a city suburban / metropolitan cop car that is used for duty (non-panelvan).
Upto 90,000 for country / highway cars.
This info is from VT days so they may have changed now, but im sure this would still basically apply for the cars.
Try this info guys, It will help.
Vehicle replacements within NSW are based on 60,000 kms predicted life (calculated based on previous vehicle usage - up to 3 vehicles back). We have had a number of errors creep into our new vehicle replacement schedule, which included an incorrect method of changing from 40,000 to 60,000 kms (we multiplied some lease periods by 1.5, rather than re calculating lease period from scratch)
TMU cars have changed to a minimum 60,000km or 2yrs service life in Vic as of approximately 2 years ago. The rest of the fleet became 60,000km/2yrs about 18 months ago.
It wouldnt be a stupid idea to buy an ex highway V8 cop car. They remove the factory motor and replace it with another one.Once the lease is up and its time to send back, they return the old motor back. Therefore, you have a almost new motor in the car when you buy it.Originally Posted by bdcmedia

yea?? do they do that with v6's too??because my VPee is an ex cop car..and has the original motor in..... I have never heard that they swap motors.... if they do, what do the do with them??? they must have a shed fullll by now.....![]()

They do NOT swap motors over nor do they hot them up for police work....
Urban legends strike the gullible again......
Nope, they only did pursuit V8's and thats it...Originally Posted by rattattack1313

THEY DO NOT CHANGE MOTORS AT THE END OF POLICE SERVICE LIFE. This is an urban myth. (probably created by a used car salesman trying to give added value to an ex Police vehicle!) The only time motors get changed is when they have MAJOR problems.Originally Posted by r00ns
Eg. The first batch of 21 Blueprint coloured Victorian Falcon XR-8 Special Anti Road Toll (SMART) cars. (which drank oil at the frenetic rate of between 3.5 & 11.5 lt per 10,000km!!!) They had engines rebuilt and replaced by Ford under warranty.
But ordinarilly, motors do not get changed. There will be numerous members on this site with ex Police vehicles and the vast majority will be able to confirm that their ID plate and current engine numbers match. If the numbers don't match, then the motor has been either been replaced by a previous owner or during Police service life due the original motor expiring, but it certainly was not replaced just because its' Police life concluded.
I think somebody has stooged you dude! You have been made the victim of an urban myth.Originally Posted by r00ns
Swap motors hey, I have heard it all now![]()
haha thats a good one..![]()
motors DO NOT get replaced at the end of police service life
i know how? ive got a neighbour that is a highway copper
he doesnt recommend buying one, because he says they have the ass driven out of em, day in day out, and only minimal servicing is carried out
They also get cold started & floored straight out of the cop shop in most country & a lot of city areas - no warm up time, no taking it easy until it's warm...... :b:
I've heard most of the urban legends that abound. The only truth to them is the VH & VK chasers that got the 177kwV5H option in MANUAL only - an M21 4 speed.
I used to service them from the mid 80s thru until around '95. I was an auto sparky at the shop (and also at my business) & did general work when no sparks jobs were in. I also had a number of cases where ECUs had to be swapped due to faults, and they were straight out, simple replacement parts from holden, nothing special.....and the memcals were not magically giving them an extra 30kw either....![]()

The VL turbos were also supplied with stock RB30ET drivetrains, but numerous ones I worked on had been tampered with - wastgate actuators wired closed or almost closed in an amatuer attempt at more boost..... done by the driver's themselves!
I have already posted in the other thread where someone else claimed the radio interference shielding was actually a plate rivetted over the ECU to stop the mechanics pinching the "hot" memcals......![]()
Now I've really heard them all![]()
The plate riveted over the ecm in the vp was an antitheft measure not aimed at the memcal but at preventing the theft of the car as the immobiliser system was very easy to override.Originally Posted by mixin
The RFI package fitted to VR & VS is a different PCM & harness with metallic plated connectors & a different memcal, (not performance oriented)

Don't forget the VS V8 received the 185kw option
The EF-EL's XR-6 Police Pack did have a different ECU (it even has a different part number on the Ford Parts System) which among other things had the 180km/h speed governor removed.

Hmmm funny that. Not even coppers can get their stories straight. :P
They're a lot straighter than the loopy story you tried to pass off.......Originally Posted by r00ns

BTW. In Vic, the Commonwealth Bank who owns them and leases them to the Police Force, sells them at AutoGroup in Brooklyn and Fowles in Altona.
