Clunk when shifting 2-3
I have a 2005 Chevrolet Lumina LS, equivalent to the VZ Executive with the 175 Alloytec and 4-speed auto (4L60E).
The problem i couldn't solve yet is that under light throttle/accelration, the shift 2-3 and 3-2 will make a clunk that I feel is like coming from the rear Diff. On other shifts 1-2,2-1,3-4 & 4-3 the shifts are very smooth.
My car now has 33,000 Km, and this problem was there since I baught the car with 17,000 Km and it feels like it is increasing. Every time i take it to the dealer here (we only have one), thay tell me it is normal by design. It doesn't sound or feel normal at all.
Anybody has any input on this issue? is it common?is there a solution?
Thanks in advance.

I just had my 30,000km service and my car has the same clunk sound when the car changes gear, and beleive it or not i was told exactly the same thing.I find by lifting your foot and then excelerate forcing the change it doesn't clunk.

I had a similar issue in my manual n had the dealer look at it n my diff was out of spec...free re-build under warranty. I think the mechanic said something about playback in the diff or something along those lines, might be worth mentioning to your dealer. Check out my thread Ive made about this too

I had the same problem with my car, the noise wasn't there all the time, so therefore I was told it was just because the box was "rough". I was also told that it could possibly be drivetrain slap, then, I was told maybe it was they way I drove....
I took it to a different holden dealer only to find out that the actual "thumping" was due to an internal fault in the box either with the pump or diaphram. My new box is scheduled to be fitted in 2 weeks time. Guys, this is not normal... if a woman can ensure hers is replaced under warranty, so too can you guys.
I live in Bris and actually rang head office in Melbourne and was told that this noise, thump, etc was not normal and should be rectified.

they love the "isnt normal / isnt known"
We're fighting over the radio head unit because its developed a crack from the screen down to the first button on not one, not 2, but 3 VZ's!
They reckon its not known, not a common fault so its not warranty and to fix buy a new one. Problem is if you go to any dealerships lot and look you'll see heaps of VZ's with cracked radio head units in the same spot.
Ive emailed Blaupunkt as I have a dealer level contact, but havent heard anything yet.

Update.
They have rebuilt the rear diff and replaced the carrier & spider gears. Unfortunantly the clunking is still there!!!
The Clunk in 2-3 & 3-2 happen less and are quiter, but they are defenently still there. I'll have to go back to the dealer and see what is their response.
