If you want low down torque, buy a diesel! Or a V8!
Or even a 4 banger hilux can do that due to the weird gear ratios.

Holden utes are **** for tradies due to the lack of traybacks. Yes, the vy and vz had traybacks but **** all in the vz and now no longer produced. A holden ute is faaaaaaar from a tradies ute

glammour tradies,

you know your going to get a good job done when say, a builder pulls up in a bruised and battered mid 90's 4wd 2.8 diesel hilux jumping out of the cab saying 'gday mate how are ya' lol

i'm not a glamour tradie, just wanna use a ute for its intended purposes. its not a work ute, my personal vehicle which will be sometimes used for work purposes. if it was going to be 100% work ute i would have bought a early landcruiser long ago. i wanted a vy tonner due to the better torquier ecotec, but no manual's in them and couldn't be bothered with an auto. vz's have the manual tonner, but only with the alloytech in the 6 and less power than the ve and it struggles so thats not an option. i hence need rwd for towing and more equal (symetrical weight). i want a ute which can be used happily as a daily driver, comfortable to travel long journey's in. (landcruiser, hilux, rodeo, patrol etc out. rough as guts on these roads, and not with my knee injury will i try that)

i do want a nice looking ute, but must be able to tow a load. do 0-100km/h in less than at least 8 seconds. have some airbags, a cd player, central locking, resonable economy etc.

and as for the v8 comment, i'm on my l's. will be on p's in 4 months. don't really want a vehicle thats only legal for me to drive for 4 months.

i used to own a vz ss thunder. was the ideal ute for everything. 6 speed was more than capable of towing whatever i could throw behind it, economy was good when i had the lean cruise setting's re-activated in the tune, factory performance stoppers (included in thunder package) were good for stopping in a hurry with a load on, ride height was just right, never scraped on anything in this area, but was never far away from it. hardlid was handy to keep all tool's locked away, and out of the weather. leather was good as could be cleaned easier than velour. went like a shower of **** (was last of the vz's with the L98 ve 6.0l motor), visability was wonderful compared to the ve ute, clutch was just right for my damaged knee (wasn't too heavy), etc. if only vicroads could see common sense

now i'm stuck with the only option of buying either a v6 or straight 6 n/a falcon or commodore which won't do the job. had the commodore, waste of time. might have to buy a new falcon, probably the closest thing to what i want.

as for andyman, exactly it mate. i've had the exact same fault report (diagnosed as a faulty torque convertor by another workshop) which was ht leads! this was diagnosed at a holden dealer who wanted 2700 for a changeover item. that was exactly my point

This was nothing at you personally, but any fully qualified professional is unlikely to take advice from an apprentice in their field. Generally speaking a more experienced mechanic is going to have more advanced knowledge, and most fully qualified mechanics are going to believe they know more than an apprentice mechanic. Plus, there are some really stupid apprentice mechanics out there also, some of which would struggle to change the oil in most cars. However, most mechanics in general seem to struggle with some very basic car maintenance which bewilders me as they somehow manage to make a living out of it. I've seen more terrible mechanics than I have good ones.
dude, he's an apprentice. It happens with any apprentice in any trade.

vssenator, while i acknowledge that you got a lemon of a ute (it happens, not all cars are created equal) but somehow i feel that you somewhat expect to much from these cars?

like i mean all you are buying is a family car with a tray instead of 2 extra doors and a boot and as we know family cars arnt fast, did you use the semi-auto while towing the trailer? any car with 5-6 speed auto will always drop back a gear or two even if it seem excessive, klugars, rav6's, aurions, territories/falcons all do it

i dont know about you guys but i stand by the fact that manual alloytecs go hard especially ve's

didn't tow with it mate. got it to 5000km when i was going to throw a tow bar on after a run in. didn't have the power to pull the skim off a rice custard.
going up a slight incline at 100km/h with no load on it would kick back to 4th and take ages to change back. its all in the programming.

i don't expect too much, the vz ss thunder was 20 times the ute of this one. its not a lemon, i've drove enough ve's to know they are all the same. central locking unlocks when it feels like it etc.

all i'm saying is for the rave about quad camshafts, variable valve timing on exhaust and inlet, variable inlet manifold, etc etc and all the new technology it performs less than impressive. my vy v6 manual ute with nothing other than 3.45 diff gears and 250,000km would easily out perform it.
