hey guys does anyone know if holden make a built in GPS for VZ's?? If so does anyone know if it can be fitted to a SV6? Thanks...![]()
ILIKEADAPOONTANG!
yeah they do, it goes between the cd player and shifter, where the flip down storage compartment currently it.
and yes it will fit a sv6
but its pricey
Save your money and buy a 'stand-alone' unit such as Garmin. You won't be disappointed. The standard of maps and quality of navigation is heaps better at a much (MUCH) lower price. The ability to upgrade the maps is also more easily achieved at (again) lower costs.
Thanks heaps guys! Anyone got a rough price estimate? I will probably get a stand alone unit if one of the buit ins is going to cost heaps but i hate them being up on the dash, looks ugly as and makes everything look messy i recon, thats why i want the built in, Thanks again guys!
ILIKEADAPOONTANG!
Why don't you just place a stand alone unit in the same spot?
yeah i was thinking that but then i dont think it would do the GPS too good being thrown around the car when im thrashin it, kinda want it stuck there type thing, unless u can do that, sorry im picky when it comes to me car.
ILIKEADAPOONTANG!
probably wouldn't be any great challenge to get it to stay there with a small bracket or something. Afterall, you don't need GPS unless you are on the streets and you can't really thrash it that violently on public roads without looking like a tosser.
yeah yeah i know what ya mean, i find my self in sydney about 3 days a week due to the woman living here and im sick of playing around with maps and s***, i just want a nice gps system that looks shmick.
ILIKEADAPOONTANG!
capa have the one's that came stock in VY and VZ's.
they are asking for something like $2000
absolute joke if you ask me, for that you can buy a double din dvd player with GPS built in
This has been covered before...
Genuine Holden Sat Nav
Near the bottom there is a photo where a guy has mounted his Navman in the factory location (stupid location if you ask me, you don't want to be looking at your gear stick when driving... and enjoy the 2 weeks you have it before your car gets broken into)
He just "whittled" a block of timber into a mount, but with enough inclination you could do a much better job with some fibreglass.
It's up to you, but the TomTom option is a pretty clear winner to me - better maps, better interface, better support, 10% of the price, lock in the glovebox when not in use... :P
Yeah i gotta get me one of thoes bezel's! thats looks frekin sweet! I quite like the factory position, u dont need to stare at ur gps while ur driving, just glance at it when u see a turn coming up or just listen to the stupid woman on it, i hate things on my dash with a passion! tuck her away down there all the way! thanks for ue hep guys!
ILIKEADAPOONTANG!
Yeah after market for sure! havent heard alot of good things from the holden ones. Anyone know if the bezel will fit with a manual or not coz im pretty sure the auto has a little bit more room between it and whrere the gps will sit compared to where the manual boot finishes. any help appreciated! thanks!

I'm in the same position. Just bought a Tom Tom and I hate the idea of it stuck to the screen, even if it is the best place from a practical point of view. Went to the local dealer today and ordered the bezel. $75 trade to me, should have it tomorrow.
That spot below the radio is an awkward shape and the bezel will fill in the gap nicely after removing the useless flip down compartment, which is a pain in the neck and not very practical anyway. Then it should be a matter of making the adaptor for the GPS to fit into the bezel. The only issue I have is that the earlier article which showed the GPS installed in the same location, referred to the need for an external aerial.
Is it necessary for this item if the GPS is located below the radio? If so, does the Tom Tom have provision for plugging in such an aerial and where should it be mounted on the car? Finally, as I've never seen one apart from the Euro shark fin, what do the aerials look like and how large are they?
Never used a Holden one to be honest. You could always find a car for sale that has one and take it for a testMate with an IS250 has factory GPS, and it's an awesome unit. It's hooked up somehow to the steering/transmission, so it can work out where you are even where theres no reception (eg underground carpark, tunnels etc) by combining last known position + relative moment since. Also mutes the stereo when announcing directions etc. Very nice, but not sure how the Holden one stacks up...they cost over $2k and are like hens teeth..
Personally I have a TomTom XL with the traffic adapter, which downloads live traffic info and tries to route you to avoid delays (works surprisingly well too!)
I reckon yours will fit behind the manual, but depending on what gear you're in (ie. 3rd or 5th) it might be hard to see.
$75 trade? Yikes! And I was thinking $100 for a weather shield was a rort!
I have to admit, the flip down pocket is about as practical as a **** flavoured lollypop.. I'm thinking about putting the smokers pack in so I get an extra 12v adaptor and (yet another) place to chuck coins.. out of sight too which can be a bonus depending on where you park
GPS needs line of sight to work properly. Newer chipsets are much better in this regard, and will pick up reflected signals to some degree, but I'm pretty certain you'll get patch reception at best. Test it out, set a destination then wedge your GPS in the flip down pocket. Drive around and see how well it goes.
TomTom have lots of accessories ( http://www.tomtom.com/products/acces...egory=-1&Lid=8 ) depending on the model you have. The antennas generally are quite subtle and you could mount them pretty inconspicuously.
Hi Danja
Thanks for the advice re the aerials. I'll take your advice and try it sitting in the tray first.
It's funny, the other day I started a thread about the price of Commodore parts. Generally, because I get them at trade price, I don't have a problem, but this little sucker is obviously not one of the cheaper items. However, it would be an extremely slow moving part and I was happy to be able to still order it, in view of the awkward shape of the aperture it will have to fit. The earlier post with the photo gave the part number and said that it was about 80 bucks, and that was nearly two years ago, so I was happy with today's price. I agree that it wasn't cheap but I'm hoping it will make my job much easier and neater than trying to make something myself.
A car salesman did me a favour several years ago when I was buying a new car. He pointed me in the direction of a portable GPS, instead of a fixed in dash unit, on the basis that I fairly well know my home city (and have a street directory in the glove box). It is when I fly to an interstate city that I really need a GPS, and it is not much good when the fixed GPS is sitting in the dash of my car back in my home city airport carpark.
Firstly I believe Garmin are the best GPS, in MHO. Next I think that Tomtom are the worst and a total waste of money. I base this opinion on several experiences overseas with rental cars where a Tomtom gave the completely wrong directions (left instead of right for example).
I have my Garmin sitting in the space below the sound system and it receives the satellites perfectly. After a little ingenuity you will figure a way of getting it in there without moving, even if you hoon around (which I strongly suggest is illegal, dangerous, reckless, stupid, moronic, childish and against the community spirit, and that you should grow up and develop some responsibilities, if not for yourself but for other inicent people around you)
No worries mate - I think they would be a pretty low-demand part, thus the high price. I'm with you though, if I was gonna install anything in that location I'd want the factory bezel, even at that price.
It's all about your situation, in your case clearly the portable was a better choice. Personally I prefer portables, but mainly because they are better value, not because I move them around a lot (before GPS dropped their prices and hardly anyone had them, having a portable was just an excuse for mates to borrow it!)
I've used a few Navmans, and a few TomToms pretty extensively. I rate the TomToms as miles ahead of the Navmans. I used to rate Navman, but after using more recent models I'd never recommend them again.
TomToms I have no issues with, they have some good features and work great IMO. I've never used, but heard good thing about Garmin. My only critisism of Garmin is that they are pretty pricey, but that might just be a reflection of their quality!
Either way though, I don't think TomToms are all that bad, even if Garmin are better. And Navmans are definately worse![]()
I have a Tomtom One and it is fantastic. It was bloody cheap too. I have used a Navman that was similar in price and although it was good, it wasn't as easy to use.
Would you believe it? My brand new Tom Tom was a dead set dud. Didn't do a bloody thing.....took it back today and received a refund. Then purchased another at a different shop. Worked straight out of the box as it was meant to. Now for the location test. If the console position is ok, I'll probably do a series of pics of the installation and post them.
If you place it in the consul you might need an external GPS aerial
