Default Running my Alloytec on 98RON - ECU reset??

G'day Guys.

Recently I decided that since juice prices were on the way back down, that I'd give the 98 RON fuel a try - I'm into the second tank now.

After I got the car (brand new), I did for a short time give the Mobil 6000 (?) a go, but didn't feel any particular performance boost or see any improvement in economy. At that time I wasn't going to pay the extra extra for the 8000 Premium. So for most of its life the car has been run on regular unleaded, from no particular refiner.

Anyhow, that's what I'm trying now - the Mobil Synergy 8000. It seems to be going a little better, not sure if it's just my imagination. I'm a bit of a skeptic though, so I tend to think that if I'm feeling a bit of improvement then it's probably real.

Obviously I'm talking about an Alloytec 190 (see my ride), it's about 70000 kays old and has never been touched. I am planning to get a 'zorst and VCM tune when funds allow, but not just yet....

What are others thoughts on this fuel? Would it be worthwhile doing an "ECU reset" to allow the computer to learn a little about the new fuel? (does resetting the ECU actually DO anything??) I have tried to search through the threads relating to ECU resetting but haven't been able to find much - I am specifically looking for info on the Alloytec here, BTW.

What's the best method for an ECU reset? Do I need to disconnect the battery, or can I just pull a fuse / fusible link?

Thanks for any help guys. Cheerz!

just disconnecting the battery will most likely do what your after, if you want to get tricky get your hands on a scan tool and reset the short/long term fuel trims aswells, if you reset the computers via tech2 you have to put the security password etc into tech2 so it will do it.

I'va always been under the impression that reseting the ECU was useless unless you had changed something dramatic. I've always been told to turn the car on and either run on idle for 15 mins or take it for a 15 min grannydrive.

if anything that would make it slower, the ecu would learn your granny driving and go into economy mode.

the ecu is consently learning and will adjust with driving habits.

greg- disconnect the battery and the turn on the headlights, it will drain all power, leave it about 10 mins and connect it all up, the ecu will be reset... well not so much reset but it wont have a memory of your driving style

not sure if this will actually do anything different to actually just driving the car. as said before nearly all modern ecu are constent learning and will take readings off various sensor and adjust accordinly.

i persnally would try it cause its a easy job to do, so there wont be any dissapointment if it doesnt do anything

i always just pull the SSR and SSR2? fuse and for mine the auto fuse and let it sit overnight.

Ive found it seems to run smoother until it learns bad habits thanks to stop start peak hour. Its ore noticable in mine because of the exhaust, it vibrates more then the original.

Greg, its worth a shot. In theory these cars tune themselves to the fuel. One thing i have noticed is after doing it in mine it chews through fuel for the first tankful, so it must do something to something. I dont just using more fuel for the hell of it after pulling a fuse if something wasnt happening

Thanks fellas - I'm kinda with you Naf - in that I reckon these things are constantly learning, so I do wonder if it'll make any real difference. But on the other side of the coin, it's relatively painless and there's no harm done if it doesn't do anything!

However, your point about the fuel usage is a good one Matt - or did it just chew through the fuel because you had that big heavy boot on your right foot?? (just kiddin') In case it does chew through the fuel I'll wait until after payday to do it!

Thanks again guys - it's good to get a few opinions on this.

i had mine flash tuned, they basically did the fuel trims, for $176 i'm not complaining cos they did 2 dyno runs but i would expect more from a vcm suite. i would give it a shot but like people have said the ecu would soon learn in stop start peak hour driving but if you get good runs it would be better.

but when you get it tuned properly you'll have to run it on 98 everytime or the car will run like a bucket of you know what

Hey Ash - what you doin' with a photo of my car in yer avatar??

Yeh, good point about once it's tuned - although it's supposedly better for your engine anyway, helps run cleaner and so on. Most of that's probably marketing hype though, but it does make sense - a bit more highly refined, less impurities....

When I get the tune done I'm not just getting the tune itself, I'm waiting until I can afford the full 'zorst package too - plus I want to improve the "stoppers" a little before I make the "go" part better....
