What is this loom for?
I just pulled the parcel shelf off my VZ, and found a random unused wiring loom adapter. Previous car (VT) didn't have anything like this and I have no idea what it's for (thought perhaps for towing harness, but I thought they piggy-backed from the tail lights?)
Anyone know what it does?

do you have a rear spoiler?
It could possibly be for the parcel shelf mounted rear brake light for cars with out the spoiler? As you need a high mount brake light one way or the other.

It does have a spoiler, but if you look closely in the second photo you can see the bulb holder for the brake light (the white plastic bit in the middle of the shelf), so I don't think its anything to do with that, plus it has about 10 wires going into it, so it would be one bloody elaborate brake light if it was!

I have a funny feeling it's for the ESP setup. (not the usual traction control, the true electronic stability program)
The connector is there in pretty much every model I've seen, but was only connected to something in an Acclaim which had ESP fitted. (it's probably been there in other models, but not that I've had the parcel shelf off of)
Anyhow, that's my guess - if anyone knows better, please correct me!
Cheerz.

Hmm... do you mean the control module? Interesting place to put it if it is!
PS. @Greg: The shelf is off to get my amps mounted up, then if all goes well I'll give your output mod a good review The input mod works a treat (the missus loves that she can plug her iPod in ) I've just been waiting for a moment to get the amps hooked up so we can get some real action happening

Could be there for reverse sensors, I Pulled the shelf of My mates Acclaim a few weeks ago and asked about a wiring harness, that could be it.

Thanks andrewmac, that makes some sense (though you'd still expect the loom to be in the boot, not the shelf!)
Anyone with ESP or reverse sensors able to confirm?

that was the reverse sensor beeper.
it sat roughly there and was a black box that would have a plug into it.

Ahhh, well that makes some sense then, although I would have expected the beeper to be in the dash somewhere.
Anyway, mystery solved Thanks!
Speaking of reverse sensors, I've heard they come with a template for the rear bar, but do the sensors come pre-painted, or do you have to do them yourself?

nah the beeper sits on the rear shelf to project the sound up onto the rear window, then because of the angle of the rear window it bounces the sound wave off towards the front of the cabin, which is why it sits slightly to the right of the shelf
I think the adventra has it mounted at the front, or somewhere stupid, its **** weak compared to the Acclaims.
as for the sensor question I have no idea.

I fitted the genuine reversing sensor package recently. The sensors are pre-painted - if you order them from your Holden spare parts department, they will ask you for your car's colour. The template comes as a large set of printed sheets, to suit all VT-VZ models including Statesman (not wagon, of course). There are about eight sets of templates, with two or three pages for each different model.
That plug on the rear parcel shelf is definitely NOT part of the reverse parker kit. The speaker is a small unit, stuck UNDER the parcel shelf in a prescribed location which is also set out in the genuine kit.
As the plug is yellow, I suspect it is safety related, as all air-bag wiring and connections are yellow. The suggestion that it relates to the stability control as fitted optionally to pre-VE models, might be on the money, due to the large number of wires connected to it. It would be interesting to see if my VY II has the fitting, but I don't feel inclined to pull out the rear seat and shelf just to find out. My son has a VZ Acclaim wagon, so I will see if such a fitting is hidden away in the rear quarter panels behind the side trims.

Thanks Calaber, you've answered my sensor question, but un-answered my loom question
If you mount the module under the shelf, what does it plug into? I don't have any loom there, in fact I now have two amplifiers there! Would you be able to mount it above if you had to?
It would seem like an inherently bad place to put any critical safety-related gear, because you're putting complex electronics in a place which is going to cop pretty much constant sun and is very poorly ventilated. Not the ideal environment for mission-critical components!
PS. How much did your sensor kit cost Calaber?
