hey guys,
just recently purchased a aftermarket trans cooler kit..but bit confused on which pipes to connect to?
has anyone fitted one to vz or similar model that give me a bit of info as to best way to hook it up?thanks![]()
I’ve installed a trans cooler and power steering cooler to my vz, it was an easy enough job to do.
This will help:
Disconnecting transmission line.
From memory, the transmission pumps fluid to the bottom connection at the radiator. These can be easily undone with a spanner (19mm I think).
I cut a gap in the plastic shroud at the bottom of the left side of the radiator to feed the hoses through and covered them with corrugated plastic tubing.
If your coolers don’t have the connections for a hose be sure to get some thread sealant for the barb fittings. Ie like this Hi-Tek Automatic Transmission Cooling System
I used Pirtek hose, clamps and barbs. The hose size is 3/8''.
Depending on the thickness of the cooler you may be able to squeeze it in between the power steering cooler and the reinforcing bar, if not, you may have to get a little cooler for the PS.
Get some rubber or grommets to put in between all the bolts for some shock resistance, also get some light thread sealant or spring washes or something to ensure the cooler doesn't come loose.
If you need any more pics or help just ask.
oh ok..i was thinking of running my aftermarket cooler in conjunction with my standard oil cooler (in the radiator iv found) by cutting a piece out of the top pipe and connection one end into my new cooler and the other out of the new cooler to return to the transmission so pretty much in series would this work/be effective?thanks heaps![]()
Yea that’s fine, I just skip the radiator out all together as the radiator can leak coolant into the trans, but you can run it in series. It rarely happens in commodores compared to falcons, but it can still happen.
Ive got this one (Hi-Tek Automatic Transmission Cooling System 10"x7-1/2"x4" with 7" diameter fan) and in the 6 months that I’ve had it, the fan on it has only kicked in 4 or 5 times, and only when idling in traffic after about an hour of driving or when I go up the nearby mountain. The fan kicks in at about 80 dgrees C so a cooler of around that size or bigger would easily suffice on its own.
Keep us current on how it pans out.![]()
ohk cool, sounds good no chance of over heating for you then! i just went for a davies craig cooler should do the trick ill hook it up tomorrow hopefully along with a trans service il keep you posted.thanks once again![]()
Yea no problem, ill check this thread throughout the day tomorrow so if you get stuck, just post.
good news all went well just mounting the cooler was a bit of a pain but finaly got there looks really good and no leakstransmission is shifting alot smoother from the service also

Thats good. Were you able to fit it in between the PS cooler and the bar?
Any pics?
yea i managed to jam it in between the reo bar and the PS cooler, finished the ends of with some proflow anodized blue fittings..heres a top half pic as i have a clubsport front end..

how did you connect to the original lines and where did you get the fittings? could you please give a bit more info
connected in series with original cooler(side tank of the radiator) cut original pipes and slid my ones going to after market cooler over them and hose clamped them.
on my car the original one on the radiator are screwed into the radiator and the hose is crimped the other end that goes to the box has a snap fitting, is that what u had and if u cut it at the tank how did u get the crimp off. sorry to be a pest.
