New to the forum guys so sorry if this is in the wrong place!
Right, unfortunatley i rear ended a black SS ute this morning, didn't seem to be much damage but haven't heard from him yet! All it looked like was a cracked rear bumper, after i slammed on i think i made contact at about 10kmph, so shouldn't have caused structural damage, well i hope not. So my question is, if that's all it is, how much would i be looking at for the bill? I'm not going through insurance. It was either a VY or VZ.
I've been looking on the net but can't find anything useful, and all I've heard from others are big figures. Any info will be appreciated!!
Cheers
Pictures would be nice
why arent you going through insurance?
the damage could be a couple of thousand dollars very easily.
cracked bar means bent reo which means bent mounts and possibly body.
quarter guards might have been pushed out of alignment as well.
then theres all the replacement parts, labour, straightening, painting etc.
dont be too surprised when you get a $3000 bill handed to you.
if, its only a rear bar, id say 700 supplied painted and fitted, as a guess, but if its done anything to the tailgate maybe upto to 2,000 depending on the colour, whether its irrepairable, easy to pop out etc

By the way, the colour was black. I'm not going through insurance cos I only got fire and theft (engineering student = no money) and there are no pictures cos I didn't invite the dude home with me.
Thanks for your help and if anyone else has anything to add, or anything to make my wallet feel safer please reply.
This was over 4k
It pays to have comprehensive insurance. I know how tough it is to earn the pennies (engineering student myself), but at least we get paid when we do work placement![]()
so you have third party fire and theft????
which covers any damage you do to anyone elses car, so dont worry about it, it just your car thats not covered
also the problem with the utes is there isnt much plastic bumpers etc, most of the time when you hit a vy/z ute, its the tail gate or the body the gets damaged, they only have little bumperettes on each side
what naf said, fire and theft should cover the other blokes car, but not yours. It should be cheaper to pay the excess than pay the damage. Whats your excess ?
ouch, how did you do that?,
dont want to make you feel bad, but my aunty and uncles my09 ve sv6 got rear ended at about 20km/h, it caused 7k of damage, mainly cause the tow bar took the impact through the chassis and twisted it a wee bit, had to go on the aligner, to look at it though, it was just a puncher hole in the bar and a slight dent in the boot lid

The car i hit was no where near as bad as the one in picture. Literally all you could see was the split bumper, and it looked fibreglass. The dent in my bonnet was small and no paint was scratched, that's all that hit tailgate (on the hinge), so can't have done much there! And my bumper was already half off cos some fool hit me on the freeway last year and gave me false details, and thats not budged. So considering the minimal damage to my car...hopefully the damage to his was just as minimal. Someone pls agree haha just for peace of mind!
Thanks for the pic and info guys
your rego comes with a green slip, that only covers medical bills (for people, not cars lol). 3rd party property is only about $300 that covers damage to other cars but not yours.
By the sound of it it won't cost tooo much tho. Post the damage when you hear ay !!
I went around a poorly designed roundabout in light rain and wasn’t thinking. The back slid out, too much opposite lock and too much juice and hit a light pole. Lucky this one was just bolted to the base so the pole kinda slipped off its support (it did what it was designed to do). Airbags didn’t deploy.
Na it’s all good, it was an expensive experience ($1200 excess), I’m just glad no one got hurt from my carelessness.
The light pole was down for around two months before they put it back up.![]()
Like everyone else said, unfortunately a ute is a very bad vehicle to rear end because of the fact they have very little to protect it's self before u hit metal. And because it's not a cab chassis setup u can't just replace the tray if the tray floor buckles and side panels which can happen very easy even front a light nudge. Hopefully you've riden under the ute tray as your car nose would go down and if std the utes are quite high at the rear.
This is my mrs car, only a small hit up the back but the damage bill ended up being over $1200 to repair..
Thing is, if you take a car to a panel shop and ask for a quote, the first question they'll ask is "is it on insurance?" because if the answer is "yes", the number you'll get is about 4x what it actually costs.
Insurance claims are like blank cheques to smash shops.
Firstly welcome, i hope this isn't the only time you visit here! Maybe later on less stressful grounds.
Even without insurance (silly you!) you can request 3 quotes. Be careful of quotes that say "subject to a more detailed inspection" or similar - try and go with one that is firmly only going to be as much as a quote and this might not always be the cheaper one.
SAdly, you might be up for a bit of a bill here. It worries me that you made contact with the hinges, even slightly, as that is obviously a rigid part of the vehicle without give and might have caused more damage than you can see.
I'd say if you are lucky you'll walk away with $1200 or so bill - simple bumper job. If not start saving - and get insurance!!!
Christ it messed up your numberplate
That is true, however most insurance companies have an adjustment on the quote because they expect this inflation now. I have no idea how it works but i know that's what they do.
Atleast you had the balls to own up mate! Good on you.
Dear oh dear... why do people have this mentality that to save money they shouldn't get insurance (not even third party). Your damage bill for that could easily top 2-3k by the time replacement panels are purchased, resprayed etc. Thats to his car alone, not yours. For the possible 5k damage bill you would be up for, that would have probably given u comprehensive for 2-3 years, or third party for 4 years. Some people just gotta learn the hard way i guess... Just be thankful you didn't rear end a new merc or BMW, because you would be up for a lot lot more.

I know I should have had insurance, but we all mistakes hey and don't worry, as soon as I'm finished paying the bill I'm going to get me some insurance!!!
About the car, quoted $1118 to get it fixed up, spoke to the panel beater where he took it and he told me that is a max figure and because I don't have insurance he will get the price down as low as he can! Which isn't bad seeing after talking to some of you guy I'd be up for a lot more.
As for the guy who i had the accident with, I haven't heard from him, only his father! Which seemed strange to me, because if it was the other way round i wouldn't leave my old man to clean up my mess! Then i started thinking that the dude did look kinda young and he was driving a v8... if he's a P plater would i still have to cough up?? Only reason I'm asking is because i got a very arsey voicemail from the Dad, claiming i was trying to get away with it and scam him by not getting in touch with him (which i had been ringing him, he just didn't answer) eventually i got him on the phone. This is after a visit from the police i might add!! So would i need to pay if he was indeed a Pplater, because he shouldn't be on the road driving a v8. I'm leaning towards i would have to pay because I'm still at fault, i was just curious.
His fault for driving a V8, not your problem.Theres your route out of it if you take it. He was driving a car that he was not licenced to aka all of his insurance goes out the window. Possible fines or suspensions for the young fella aswell!
Could the tailgate still be opened and closed locked with no rubbing or force?
If so there would have been no structural damage. My dad reversed my ute into a pole doing about 5-10k’s and he didn’t even feel it. Replaced the tailgate, no problems.
agreed costs more than first thought a courier hit my arse end when i cut him off only cost me a grand to get a cut on added to my end but his bill came to near 4 grand and his bullbar was hardly damaged
