You should never let engines get that hot, however i can't really talk, mine went that high once (really quickly) and i only noticed because of the "Engine Hot alarm". I was lucky and only damage was a head gasket! But they're not cheap to replace.
Bah, scare tactics. Sounds like he got to it soon enough, (being that he said it came on when he was going to park) which means that it was sufficiently cool while driving because of the airflow produced by the cars forward motion. But as soon as he slowed down, less airflow, engine heats up faster, light came on. However if you're worried mate, take it to a service center and get em to have a look for error codes.

Me? I'm the guy who does his job ... you must be the other guy ...
When i did a coolant fluch on mine, i didnt tighten the rad cap up tight enough, came home after work & notcied this gurguling noise.
Popped the bonnet & noticed all this dried coolant around the cap & hoses. Waiting about an hour took the cap off & no water had all boiled away. Didnt do any damage
Always make sure you've tightened ur rad cap b4 u drive away.![]()

The V6 alloytec also have a problem with the thermostats not being perfectly round in the early models.
When they get up to around 80,000 ks they can jam shut.

I had that exact same problem a week ago mate. Unfortunately i was on a road trip interstate when it happened![]()
Had to get the RAA out to Woop Woop to get it cooled down. Then i had to turn back and and get a new cap from Holden. They said it was a fairly frequent occurrence...
Got it covered under warranty though
Here's hoping my engine hasn't had years taken off it's life.
hope its not the thermostats, only because its a lot quicker to remove the trans and its $$$, it could also be the head they tend to crack a fair bit, they way to check that is to remove the plenum and have a look down into the valley, or it could just need to bleed the system, take the shroud off above the rad, on the drivers side top of the rad there should be a bleed screw, get a phillips head screwdriver and start the engine and fill up the coolent, after that undo the screw a little bit and keep toping up untill it starts the flow threw the screw, then tighten back up put the cap on and check the res.
My VZ-SS only over heats that bad when the outside temp gets over 34-35
turning the heater on & winding down the windows fixs that problem
