Hi all. I have just invested in the newest car i have ever bought in my life which is unusual for me as i normally buy something cheap i fix up. I specialize in high performance cylinder head work and do anything from V8 Supercar heads to V12 lamborghini Offshore Powerboat heads and have been around race engines most my life. I have owned a VR commodore for about 5 years and love it but it was falling apart and i needed to upgrade. I had a look at a 2004 VZ SV6 which after my first drive was happy to buy it. Now the bad part. Next morning upon starting it cold it has a massive timing chain noise which was very hard to hear inside the car with windows up but outside it is chronic. Holden give me no clues to this problem and after ringing around people i know in the engine game i am no closer to diagnosing this issue. Some real help with this and please not heresay as i have had already. What better place to ask a question then from someone who may have diagnosed and fixed this issue.

is it loud ticking or a dull inconsistent softish ticks, if it the latter thats standard for them to make that tick for a few minutes from cold start,
my chain make a rattle when the cars been sitting around for a up to about an hour hot, it make an audible tick tick tick until the oil pressure builds up,
i remember in a holden bulletin that their was a batch of chains that stretched, if the stretch got real bad it sets a fault code

Thx for your response to i appreciate it.
the early alloyteccs suffered chain chatter, did you get some warranty from the dealer? if so get them replaced. holden run a different cut gear and chain on the 05+alloytecs i read in a mag.
sounds like mine, but mines on hot starts, and only gives 3 or 4 ticks, many newer cars doing it though these days as you may now with your line of work, its just the way there designed
also is it only cold starts? im not sure on the tensioner in alloytecs, but maybe it has a jammed oil valve so it loosing pressure when the engines switched off, also so you know, there are three chains in the engine, crank to idlers, on either side, then idlers to cams
if i remember ill sift through the techline bulletins

wait til the exhaust pipe heat shield starts to rattle on cold start up, then you'll be embarrased![]()
I thought maybe this was a very common problem on this engine but it seems i may have just bought a dud. When searching for a car my father inlaw had look at 1 for me and mentioned it had a timing chain type noise but i was a little skeptical because he is a ford man. But theres 2 that were for sale that had by the sounds of it the same problem. So if anyone has had this issue some help would be great full. This post has very similar problems Alloytec engine clattering on start-up
from someone called Tom Johnson but he doesnt seem to be on here anymore and doesnt list if it was actually repaired properly

this is a vid on the actual sound but its alot worse when its cold YouTube - Timing chain noise
Damb i though mine was loud on cold start-up. I would bet the timing chain tensioner has had it.
