Hi,thanx for the response. We had the tail pipes changed to have just a little bit of rumble last december, fast forward to about 4 weeks ago and my engine warning light had come on with a check powertrain warning. The car yard had a look and apparently cleaned th 02 sensors, got it back then 2 days later same thing happened. Now saying i need a new cat but wont cover it under warrany coz of slight impact damage(its quite low),turns out its the tinest scratch. We got a 2nd opinion which of course says holden are full of it.Now theyre saying my car shoud have a 3rd cat but its missing???They are claiming further mods have been done, which havent by me.They showed me a system on a 6ltr statesman with the 3rd "cat",but its not the same car so im lost on what to do.They are pulling all kinds of excuses so they dont pay for it,the quote was $1000!

There is no 3rd "cat" in a standard 5.7/6L exhaust. You have your headers from the motor going into 2 cats then through two mufflers finally to a single larger muffler right at the rear. Usually finished off with twin tips.

Thats what we've been told by several people. On the statesman they showed us there was a box(if you could call it that)on the rhs about half way down the exhaust, this is what they are telling me i should have but dont. They have ordered a system in to compare to mine, but how the hell do i know if its from a 6ltr vz ss!I realise that the o2 sensors have possibly been affected with the pressure change with the altered tail pipes but is the solution a new cat???

Do they mean a 3rd muffler? There should be 3 mufflers (as in the pic above), but only two cats.

Hi,no they are definatley saying 3rd cat not muffler(we double checked) on that.Saying that though there is no 3rd muffler on my car, hmmm. Now im worried. The cats and piping are original holden parts we got told by the second opinion we got from the performance centre my brother deals with and they were the ones who changed the tail pipes to start with.

ive got a VZ ss 6L, and yes it looks like a 3rd cat.

i can see where the 2 cats are up the front then there is one that is on the drivers side back a bit that looks like a more traditional cat(older).

    hope this helps

Im interested in the fact they ordered one in to try and prove the point???

Holden usually are full of you-know-what.

As for the problem its hard to tell but I would be interested in finding out whether its a faulty O2 sensor or not first as the 02 and cat go hand in hand. I could be wrong but just because they cleaned it up then it came good for 2 weeks doesnt nessicarily mean the sensors not to blame either.

One would think that if the sensor came good for two weeks after being cleaned and then started causing trouble again, the sensor is the problem. I would suspect that it was not the cleaning that solved the problem for two weeks, rather the fact the sensor was disturbed and has started working properly as a result albeit for two weeks. I would suggest they replace the sensor then work from there.

Holden generally aren't the problem it's just inept dealers

I just had a squizz under my VZSS and it too has the extra cat thing. It is only on the pipe running from the right bank so I doubt it actually is a cat. I checked in my VY workshop manual, they don't have it.

this is the factory exhaust, so yes it is meant to have the third resonator < its a resinator not cat

They must be talking about item 5, I don't recall seeing that on my LS1 VZ.

Don't be suprised if the mechanic at Holden is just a 2nd day apprentice and thinks a muffler IS a cat converter mate......

So holden has rang saying they have the exhaust in to compare with mine,it has the 3rd cat, resinator or whatever freakn else its called. So long story short they"re not covering it under warranty(i know shocker)!!!They did "clean" the 02 sensor the first time,it only took 2 DAYS for the engine warning light to come back on not 2 weeks!I think we're are going to get new headers, high flow cats and the rest of the exhaust done to join up with the tail pipes and hopefully that fixes the light problem aswell as me getting a sweet running/sounding 6ltr!Thanx to everyone who has responded, you guys are a great resource

only way to go for an 8, standard pipes are uber ghey, they dont justify a v8's presence like it should

might be to do with resonance, hence there is also a second brace on it

all i know is mine is quieter then my GF's VY v6, and this is with the rear pipe section removed at the diff.
as soon as i can afford it im getting my exhaust system done.

also apparently, you cant use certain types of silicone as they ruin the o2 sensors.
but i dont think you have changed anything before the 02 sensors.
