Hey Guys
I have an early 06 Commodore SV6 and under hard accleration, when the revs hit anything above around 4.5K - 5K and the transmission shifts, there is a screeching sound from the engine bay, and the car lurches forward. Any idea what can cause this.? My guess was a worn out belt or a blown bearing. But not sure. Its mainly from 2nd upwards, from 1st to 2nd, nothing ( That I can hear ). Its an Alloytec 190, with an Auto.
Any tests I can do.? Or is it a problem with the transmission. The car has 45K' KMS on it, and im the first owner.
The sound is driving me crazy.
Appericiate it guys, Thanks...

Check the transmission fluid !!
Thanks, will do that first thing in the morning.
Weird, I just have had the car serviced by Holden. Im sure that Transmission Fluid is somewhere on there " 160 Point Check List ". Well they had to charge me for something.
Uhh isn't the 5 speed a sealed unit? I don't think you can check the fluid.
yeah the 5 speed is a sealed unit. mine makes a slight chirp when it changes from 3rd - 4th but thats at around the 130 - 140 mark. but i suppose thats around the rev range your describing it at.
my belt looks fine so i'm not really that concerned about it atm
Chev badges are an instant fail
you can still check the fluid, how can something be actually sealed, it has to get filled, does check power train come up, i had a wagon with a similar sounding problem, it was issues with the throttle control but with check powertrain light
to check the fluid jump under the car, at the front right of the sump there is the drain plug if look just to the right of case in line with the drain plug, the plug protrudes from the casing slightly and is just above the case to sump join, if you undo this plug with the car level and switched off see if the fluid is level with the plug, also see what the colour is like, if its pink or very light brown perfect, if its dark brown and smelling burnt, change the fluid and check for transmission errors

Ill just head out, to take a look at the belts and everything, before jumping under the car and report back.
Sorry for the digression from the original post but these "sealed for life" trannies are bull....!
My daughter bought a brand new XC Barina auto in 2001 and drove it until she sold it to me three years later with 120k on the clock. The trans was not sealed but the oil was supposed not to be changed.
Bugger that, I drained it. Absolutely filthy black. How can any transmission keep on going when the oil is in that state? It was still working ok, but I felt a lot better once I had replaced it.
As Andyman says, if you can get the old oil out, do it. 75k is long enough for something like trans oil to become degraded. Fresh oil sure won't hurt it.
What I meant is that you can't check the fluid level like you would on an "unsealed" unit. The sealed unit means the fluid level should remain the same. Thats why there isn't a dipstick for the 5sp. You can drain it, and refill it but that is about it. I don't **** around with those kind of things anyway. Thats what my mechanic is for, so I can have someone to blame if it all goes to shit![]()
Alright, well its definately not the belts, had a mate come over today and check it. We're pretty sure that its gotta be the fluid. Im gonna take Hingo's advice and send it off to a mechanic, im just not too comfortable messing around with tranny's and anything too complicated. Changing the oil is good enough for me.
So any idea what kinda' quote I can expect.? Im guessing around the AUS $200~ mark to drain and refill the transmission..?
Alsoo, instead of starting a new thread, Im looking at brakes too.
Ive already done the 2 hole mod, but dont wanna go MAFLess just yet.
Now im looking at stopping this thing, headed down to my local after market parts dealer, and came acorss a brand called DBA. Ive done my searching, and have read that they're mainly a good brand. Now the guy suggests I go for the Slotted 5000 Series. ( See Link - Disc Brakes Australia - DBA PRODUCTS )
Just wanna check that these can be driven around town and town temps, without them squealing away. A buddy of mine has a race specification brake package on his EVO, and they squeal like CRAZY around town, im guessing because of the temps.
Any experience.
Thanks Guys.!!
those 5000 are little extreme for on-road use and **** off expensive, just get the basic slotted design, dont worry about cross drilled, they have more chance of cracking

does the sound happen when you flog the car or "everyday driving"?
The squeal only happens when I completely put my foot down. During normal everyday driving, its quiet.
Alright, car has been at Holden for about a week now, they're replacing the transmission ( Thank God for the extended warranty ), all new belts, some bushings had to be replaced, changing all the sparks, pretty much replacing everything that they can get their hands on lol.
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for their help. Its all sorted now ( Hopefully )
The sealed transmission uses a special machine that checks the levels and pumps the oil in through the sump plug. Any mechanic that specializes in auto trannys will have the machine. I just bought a 05 SV6 and my mechanic checked the oil and it was discolored so he changed the oil and the shifts are heaps smother now.
Well they diagnoised it as a faulty transmission (?) It ran a good 75K. At first they wanted to charge me for it, but then started to sing a differient tune when I told them that I had an extended warranty lol. They started giving me the run around. Its all sorted tho, I should be picking up the car in the next 2 hours, havent seen her for a week.
Still how ive ended up with a bill of about $3500AUD, I have no idea. I shall go see what exactly they've done.
I also had asked them to replace 2 plastic parts that had broken ( Front passenger side seat cover, the plastic thing at the bottom ), and drivers seat rear pouch. And stating the obvious, the parts are not avaliable.
Dont know what to do with these clown anymore.
Anyway, will pick the car up and report back.
Thanks for all the help guys.!
Alright, got her back.. Completely differient beast.
Shifts so quick now.!
So much work was done, had needed 3 sheets of paper for the bill.!
Changed the bushings from the lower control arms, changed the engine mounts, changed the brake master cylinder etcc...
Also they cleant the air intake system, the fuel injection system, and also used something called BG-208 Power Enhancer (?).
In other words, shes a completely new car.!
And again, thanks for all the help guys.!!

They want me to bring the car back next month for the 80K service. Im fairly sure that ill take it to my own mechanic for that, I just dont like leaving her alone with strangers lol.
