    Default Hub Rings

    Hi There

Can you explain the importance of hub rings to me please

I recently fitted 20,s to my VT,then got it lowered, then wheel aligned and some where changing the wheels back to my 17's numerous times ive either lost or crushed my hub rings.

Most tyre shops ive spoken to dont have them in stock and have to order them in
I would have thought if they were critical they'd have them on the shelves.

    Thanks

    Hub rings serve a very important purpose. Even if the Stud Pattern and Offset are correct on a wheel, the only thing that is used to locate (centre) the wheel on the hub is the centre bore of the rim. Yes, you have 5 wheels studs with nuts fastened however the tolerances in stud holes on wheels is not accurate enough to ensure that the wheel is centered on the hub and;
    a) won't cause vibration at speed.
    b) is putting an even load on each of the wheel studs.
The studs affix the wheel to the hub but the centre bore locates (centres) the wheel.

So, to sum up; Not using hub rings where they are required (where the centre bore of the wheel is larger than that on the hub) may cause an excessive load on one or more wheel studs which may lead to breakage, and/or may cause vibration similar to that of an unbalanced wheel/tyre at speed.

Now, all wheels that require hub rings for the specified fitment will ship with them in the box. In most cases tyre stores do not need to order them for any reason and therefore would not have them on the shelf. Yes, they would have them boxed up with their new wheels but they aren't going to give you those or else they'd have to replace them prior to fitting the wheels. Usually the only reason a tyre store has hub rings laying around is when they either forget to put one back on, or they scrap some old rims that have them stuck inside.

They can of couse be ordered in and I would recommend ordering them and fitting them as soon as you can, for piece of mind if anything.

I need to know the centre bore of the rims and what they are going on...

most aftermarket rims will have a 73.1mm centre bore but check it with a set of vernier calipers as it can be anything.

Commodore Centre hubs are 69.5mm pre VE and 66.9mm VE.

i used to have a honda prelude with 17's, i had to change back to 13's cos i damaged a rim... didnt know about hub spacers, and i crushed one with the smaller rim.. this led to the wheel flying off the car... very scary. i recommend paying close attention to them... just my experience.

I don't agree that this led to your wheel flying off the car. The studs still centre the wheel, or at minimum they will hold the wheel on the car with wheel nuts. I've run some import wheels on my Skyline for a year now without hub rings and without a single issue (with wheel spacers too)

Disclaimer: I have used hub rings and believe you should use them.

From a fitment point of view. The stud holes are larger than the studs to allow the wheel to be inserted. The chamfer on the nut and mag should align and centre the hole around the stud without centre location on the hub.

I agree people should use them, it makes sense, but with tapered wheel nuts, and taking time to align everything properly when fitting the wheel, things should be ok, provided you get no vibration.

Sorry to dredge up an old thread but I have a fairly unique problem

I have a set of mint condition R8 wheels off my WH Statesman (19 X 8) and I want to put on new rubber and put them on my WM Caprice

Looking at this info, if pre VE Centre hubs are 69.5mm and VE/WM are 66.9mm, then I would need 2.6mm hub rings (or 1.3mm thick)

Is there any such thing? Maybe I'd have to get my R8 wheels bored out to 73.1 and use hub rings for a VE

    Anyone got any ideas?

You can get hub rings to suit 69.5 > 66.9 - PM us if you need a set.

I know you posted this ages ago...but just to clarify...What would have happened is that the hub ring stayed on the hub and then cor3yz has fitted a factory hub-centric wheel on...this has crushed the hub ring but also meant that the wheel nuts couldn't be fully tightened...therefore they were only hanging on by a few small threads not the entire stud...hence the wheel fell off..

Mate just got my wheels in from Japan.....ADVAN RZ 18x8(f) and 18x9(r)
They are to go on my VY Calais. I went into TEMPE Tyres but they didn't have the correct ring size. Pretty sure they said the rim diameter was 71.6mm
