Default Commodore tyre & rim size recommendations and limitations guide

    Hi Guys,

I see a lot of posts where people are asking what tyres will fit what rims, what rims will fit what car, what's legal, what's not etc etc.

I have created a simple spreadsheet explaining recommended tyre sizes by model and rim diameter which may or may not prove useful to everyone. Whilst it is a good guide, it is just that; a guide. Please don't think that other fitments aren't possible but the recommendations made are based on generally accepted legal practices and experience. Some states have varying laws which may or may not conflict with the recommendations made.

I know people have put 'extreme' fitments onto vehicles such as 22" wheels but the guide makes recommendations on what can be done legally in most states.

    All feedback is encouraged.

    Cheer guys

Yes you can put wider tyres on the back, but they won't be legal because the outer diameter is too large if you don't increase the profile.

You can however fit a 245/30R20.

Will they still be illegal if the speedometer is recalibrated considering that the speedo signal comes from the rears?

Yes, still illegal - the law in question has nothing to do with the speedo, it relates to the outer diameter of the tyre. You cannot increase the outer diameter of the tyre by more than +15mm above the largest standard tyre for that vehicle.

If they are 275/30R19's they are the correct diameter...but the width is another legal issue.

Yes that's the correct size, the width is not a legal issue in NZ

Catching on the guards, now that's another issue ....

In your table you have mentioned that 20" rims on a VE are non compliant due to the load index rating. Seeing as HSV have 20" rims how can this be possible or have I missed something?

Not if you use 245/30R20's all round.

Just wondering what the difference will be on my VYSS to the speedo as I just purchased a full set of VE GTS 20" Copies fitted with 225/30/20"s but I will also be fitting F&R Coilovers shortly which will allow me to fit wider tyres.

My local Tyre-Zone here in Capalaba stated that since I am going to fit Coil-overs F&R I should be running 245/30/20's not 225/35/20's as the 225's are over stretched on a 8.5" wide rim....is this true?

This is correct, and is something I have been meaning to update on the chart. 245/30R20's are actually a better size than the 225/35R20's for pre VE vehicles however the 93 load rating may be an issue on some vehicles.

Your VY should have 225/55R16 standard (not 225/50R16)) and the correct replacement in 19" is a 245/35R19 - there are plenty of options in this size.

Yes, but what does your tyre placard say is the largest size allowable? 225/55R16, maybe 215/60R16? there will likely be a few different sizes listed on it.

it states the 2 you have listed plus 235/45/17, does that mean i can fit any tyre with the same rolling diameter as any size listed on my card?
