    Default reverse offset wheels

i know it seems like a silly question, but for my drift car, i want to push the rims out of the guards a little. (about 0.5-1inch out of the guards.)

iv seen some people just flip the rims and rebolt them back down with sucess and was wondering if anyone had done it to a commodore for whatever reason. i understand they need a flat mounting surface and the bolt holes would need to be re-counter-sunk but is it something that i definately CAN NOT do at all?
its not registered, and it would be done at my own risk i know. just curious coz its my cheapest option.

i think your biggest issue would be stripping your studs and the wheels coming off.

why would i strip the studs? i would guess the mounting face of the wheel would still be right up againts the hub? so the nuts would still go the same depth?

There would be a gap in between the rotor and rim. Because of the raised lip that sits inside the stud holes.
When its faces the correct way that lip curls outward and its the surface area around the stud holes that contacts with the rotor.
But if you flip it round the other way, it would be that lip that hits the rotor first and takes all the load.
Leaving, albeit, a small but unnerving gap between rim and rotor. Which could lead to damage in the future.
Thats just my view on it though. Picture of a steelie below.

could that lip be theoretically machined off ? and if so, would that then allow the rim to sit flat against the hub or still not?

my other (more probable) option is to bite the bullet and pay $80 each for a bolt on spacers

    Single most retarded thread.

Yep, pay the money for wheels with a different offset.
Spacers are just as dangerous, because your stud length will be shortened.
Dont risk your life for a "cheap option".

look at getting the offset changed, or the centers rebarreled. they cut the center out and weld it in in a different spot, or weld it to a fresh barrel at any offset you please.

Just using this thread as a referance, I don't think its much of a risk...

ps. bolt on spacers dont 'shorten" the stud length, they bolt a plate on, which has its own studs on it.

Ah ok. Was wondering whether that was the case.
Thanks for the heads up. That sounds a little safer.

The last comment was refering too just flipping the wheels rather than buying a product made for the job i.e wheel spacers or new wheels.

I think the whole fact that the OP considered putting the wheels on backwards to get extra off-set shows that the risk to life and limb, probably isnt such a great risk in the great scheme of things...

    thanks soop. :|

yes it was considered for the offset, but i also like the idea of a really deep dish. and the fact that i dont currently have $700 for rims n tires with the right offset just yet. i have a set of 20p 16 inch rims on the front, but i want bigger, and 0p offset. it was just an idea coz iv seen it done on a lot of JDM spec cars to get that crazy offset look. and i happen to like that look.

    geez.

oh really?? seems like i need to say it to you. i was being sarcastic at soop. im sick of people putting me down for voicing my ideas. it was just an idea after all. im not SERIOUSLY going to do it. im not blind, i can see that theres going to be mounting issues. iv just seen other people do it, and it worked for them so i wanted to see if anyone had actually been successful on a commodore.

Why not just get some 1" bolt-on adapter spacers to go from 5x120 to 5x114.3 - that way you can fit most JDM wheels and FORD wheels which are available with lower offsets - combined with the fact that you have 25mm less offset from the spacer. Honestly its going to be the cheapest option and you can ditch the 5x120 stud pattern which is very limiting when it comes to wheel selection. > Wheel Adapter 5 Lug 100 To 4 Lug 100 (Pair)

Not legal on-road but might be fine on the track - check with scrutineers...
