    Default Stamford SSW Wheels-Problems

    Hi there,

I hope you can help me here. I have had the above wheels on my car for about 8 months now. They are 20" in 9" width with a +35 offset all round with 245/35/20 tyres fitted.

Ever since I've had them I've had problems with scrapping the rear guard (which I've now had rolled) and they seem to sit pretty wide at the front guard. Every wheel dealer I have asked say that these wheels are made for the VE Commodore but I can't see how.

I've been in touch with the dealer that sold them to me and also Stamford Wheels themselves who won't really do anything for me. They tell me now they are also available in a +45 offset which would be perfect for the front now. Just means I'll have to buy 2 new wheels and have 2 spares.

Will I have any issues running 2 different offsets but the same width wheels or not?

    Any help is appreciated.

I ran SSW phantoms on mine. 8's on the front and 10's on the rear. Due to the 10" rear and lowered suspension the guards rubbed all the time.

Got the guards rolled and it went away.

    Hmmm.... Bit weird

10" rubbing makes sense.....but not 9". I just think the offset is wrong for the car but they were still sold to me.

Seems like an odd size to me anyway. I've heard of 8, 8.5, 9.5 and 10's before but not 9

I agree with Bonners - that does seem like an odd size.

I've got SSW's on mine - 8.5's on the front, 9.5's on the back lowered on SSL's / SSSL's with no rubbing and no rolled guards.

    I think you're right - it's an offset issue.

The fact they reckon they've done tonnes of VE's in these wheels is BS! I'm still waiting to here from the manufacturer to see if they'll do something for me here. I want to put the +45 offset on the front at least. Even if I can buy them direct from them would be fine by me. Let's see what happens.

Would the difference in offset make a difference? ie 10mm

Absolutely. 10mm can easily be the difference between scraping and not scraping.

Technically I'm not scraping on the front because the front isn't too low, but the thing I don't like is they look as though they stick out too far at the front. I suppose the 10mm would still make a difference to the way they look.

20x9 +35 is a very common fitment for Pontiac G8's in the US. The rear scraping does surprise me..

We normally run a 20x9.5 with a +45 so with a 9" rim and +35 offset you are only protruding 4mm further out than that.

If the rear guards have now been rolled and you aren't scraping any more, I wouldn't worry about the fitment. I can understand the front is protruding a lot more than standard though so if you don't like it then you can change it out. Personal preference in my opinion. Have you got a shot of the front wheels looking down the side of the car?

The rear is actually sitting really nice and now that the guards have been rolled there is no issue there anymore. The fronts do sit out a bit far for my liking.

I have pics of the car in my profile but no real good shots of the front. I'll see what I can do when I'm home later.

OK......So, I don't have any photos of the wheels from above just yet but have spoken to the manufacturer this morning. He is willing to sell me 2 of these wheels in the +45 offset at cost price if I want them. Question I have if I do this and pay the money will the 10mm make a huge difference in how the wheels will sit at the front of the car. Just need some opinions to ease my own mind whether to do it or not. Otherwise I just leave them the way they are and be done with it.

Personally, I don't think it will make a huge difference. It may make a subtle difference which is noticable by you.

But the fronts dont scrub right? You just want to do it for looks? Again, personally I would just leave it, but it's up to you. Depends how much it's bothering you at the moment and how much $ you have to spend. I actually like the "sticking out" look - fills out the guards more.

Yeah, I probably should save the coin and leave it the way it is. Maybe one day I'll come across a cheap set on ebay or something.

    Thanks for your feedback

    Are the +45 wheels still a 20x9 or are they a 20x8.5?

I'm pretty sure they are still a 20x9. Not 100% on that though. Would this matter too much?

20x8.5 +45 is your stock standard Commodore fitment....it will sit 16mm further in than the 20x9 +35

That would be a fare bit if they were 8.5 but I think they are still 9. Not sure if it's worth the money for 10mm. Even at cost they want $180 each wheel.

Roll your guards some more an lower it...

    Go for "Meaty Flush"

Can you provide photos of the front & rear on how close your arches are to the tires?

    Cheers

I'd love to go lower but I already scrape on certain driveways.......don't want to make it worse than it is.

There is a photo album in my profile that shows a pic down the side of the car.

You have a million miles of clearance, if anything i'd get some 10mm hubcentrics for the rear an bring them out more.

I have a bit of room now because of the guard rolling but I won't be puting spacers in there don't worry. In a way I was just kidding...lol.

Thanks for all the help guys

I'm contemplating now maybe bringing the front down another 20mm. The back sits at 620mm front the bottom of the rim and the front sits at 640mm. I wanna try and bring it nice and even.
