Default VT style airbox's

There have been quite a few members on this site who have wanted to fit the later VT series onwards airbox's to the earlier model VN-VS commodores but have discovered that this doesn't work because the lower half ofthe box is completely different and much deeper. the benefits of fitting the later model airbox is increased filtration area (about 30% larger filter surface) and a better shape (for inreased airflow) top half. with your resources and skills i have no doubt that maybe you could mould a new base (bottom half) of the airbox to suit the earlier commodores etc. maybe that way the members of earlier model commodores would also be able to use your CAI setup as well

appreciate your feedback

cheers

Yeah, I think it would make a good improvement on the earlier models. Replecement filers are easy to get, and the factory top half would fit too.
YT have not done plastic moulding so it's not something we could just "do on a whim" but definately a good idea that deserves some consideration.

Cheers.
Mark.

Aswell as being able to run the droopy dick on a pre-VT aswell which would open the market up to all VN-VS V6, V8 and L67 owners

i'm sure there would be a market for them, i'm looking to upgrade my VS but my only option at the moment would be to fit a POD filter to increase the airflow potential but i'm looking to maintain a factory look and i'm sure there are many others in the same boat etc sorry, i thought i'd seen some plastic intake pipes on your site etc. i have previously considered doing something myself but have found the cost of a "one off" is too costly in both time and money etc but maybe somebody in your shoes who could mass produce and get a return of the product etc. hope you can use the idea

cheers

I was just picking up some parts from a guy this afternoon who has a VN with a late model air box. He cut the whole bottom section away to make it fit.

funny that this idea is floating around in here, ive been playing with this idea for a while - just to lazy to actually finish it off.
ive got the top of a VX airbox which ill have some 45* piping coming out of to attach to my pod, then for the lower half im fabricating it up out of sheet metal (which will be sprayed in black exhaust manifold paint).
some of the problems ive ran into are the annoying washer bottle position, which i simply cut down shorter to fit the VX airbox top over - so the washer bottle is actually going to be in my airbox, lol.
also the aircon hose that runs down that passenger side it a bit of a prick to navigate construction around.....but its do-able.
ill have to take some pics once ive finally finished.

Ron's whippled ute has just such an aircleaner in place and it uses the the LS1 lid and just the top edge of the bottom (to hold the airfilter in place) and the rest is built out of aluminium.
Also I believe Tim with the Super6 Torana hatch has done similar.
I've aquired the LS1 box and have cut away the bottom about 25mm below the filter lip and have been looking at how to build the bottom section without putting the waterbottle filler inside the box.
I have sat the cut section ontop of my VS lower box and it sort of lines up missing the water filler and does not hit the bonnet so basically need to come from the base of the VS box and rise up to meet the shape of the LS1 box.
1st pic shows the cutdown base and lid with airfilter.
2nd & 3rd pics show the cutdown top of the base.
The 4th pic shows the relationship between the cutdown lip and the VS lower airbox base and roughly where it sits whilst still clearing the water filler neck.

looks like a few of use have considered this idea, thats why i put it to YT. if they or some other supplier could mould a base to the late model airbox to suit the VN-VS there would be a market for them and if it could be done in plastic and retain the factory look this would be a simple mod that wouldn't draw the atension ofthe plod with better flow, more CAI options and less restrictive flow from filter to TB etc

I was toying with this a few months ago - ripped the airbox of a amtes LS1 VX to play with it and came to the same conclusion - cutting out the bottom part of the box and custom making one was the best option - as well as moving the washer bottle.

I'm just using a pod from my gf's car (not going at the moment) and it sucks. The hissing draws cops attention, it is not shielded so it is copping the engine heat. I can't justify buying a new OTR, adaptor and top half of the box from the standard VS L67, and I haven't had the time to really sit down and attack a moulded bottom half of the box (the LS1 top half fits so snug) to get it welded up.

Would be a great option for the earlier models to get rid of the **** factory box and really open it up

Dave.
here's the deal.
We are snowed under with work on existing products and new ones already started.
I think this is a good idea and would be fairly popular.

Maybe we could do it as a YT/JC forum project and get some more of the members to contribute, especially as the idea came from immortality in the first place.
It might also be interesting for people to see some of whats involved in getting a new product off the ground.
Any thoughts?
