Air con probs - fan turns on and off

Hi all, am having problems with my air con lately.
It will be on, working ok, and the the fan turns itself off for a minute or so and then turns itself back on. I also have a cross come up on the climate control every now and then but half the time if the cross is there the aircon is still working alright. just wandering if anyone has had problems like this before.

BTW. it is a 2002 Statesman with climate

it almost sounds like the system is shutting off to defrost the coil, I used to work on mining equiptment with A/C and was for ever defrosting the evaporator coils since the guys using them would crank them up to the max which resulted in a frozen coil. Not sure if climate control has a de ice function since the AC system would need a reversing valve for that, perhaps a dodgy connection at the fan motor or fan speed resistor?
