VE Omega ute. VZ Monaro (Sting Red)
Hi guys, I just replaced the steering wheel on my VE omega ute with a leather VE one from Feebay and when I turned the ignition on I got the airbag fault warning and none of the stereo controls would work so, I changed it back and I've still got the airbag warning and no stereo controls. For everything not to be working I'm wondering if something further down the column has come unplugged. Does everything go through the clock spring unit as that got rotated a couple of times while I was mucking about getting the connections undone. Sometimes I wish I could just leave things alone but the plastic steering wheel is about the only thing on the car I don't like.
Any help would be appreciated,
Cheers, Stu.

I would never recommend installing something around an airbag, these are very dangerous and if you disconnect and reconnect in the wrong way they can go off. As for the fault, you have not connected everything back together correctly, get a professional to do the job.
If you take it to Holden, it will cost you big time. They are not a fan of DIY installs on steering wheels, also if your car is still under warranty, say bye bye to that.

It is not a hard job to do. But if you make a mistake it will cost you!

had you disconnected the battery before removing the original steering wheel?

If everything is connected where it should be (Airbag plugs are easy to identify - all yellow connections) try disconnecting the battery for 30min and reconnect, then retest.

Sometime cycling the ingnition several times can clear errors.

Youve broken the clockspring.

Whenever doing this the clockspring mustn't move as it can only go a certain amount of turns each way before it breaks.

What a crock of ****. There is no way the airbag can go off unless you short the terminals. The plugs can not be connected wrong, they only go one way. Airbags are not dangerous at all if you use a bit of common sense. Disconnecting the battery when working on the steering wheel is a must though.

The airbag fault has to be reset with a scan tool, disconnecting the battery won't do it. I'm with RiCeY, I reckon the clock spring is either broken or damaged.

Not sure on price, ring your local Holden parts. They arent repairable you need to replace the clockspring.

Steering wheels on new cars cannot be rotated more than a certain amount. That's pretty much full lock anyway. The clockspring can sometimes be attached to things like abs sensors etc.

Airbags will only be deployed if the igniter in the airbag is triggered by a voltage source. It won't go off if shorted or pulled out of service without disconnecting the battery allthough the airbag computer will detect a fault which will need to be cleared with a Tech2.

That said to prevent airbag faults always pull the battery before removing any of the airbags and reconnect only once the airbags have been refitted.
