sure you got the correct flywheel and that its in the correct indexed on the crank? there were at least 3 different flywheel balances for pre ecotec engine, VR being an uncommon one. If you have fitted a VN s2 or VP flywheel on a VR it will vibrate the hell out of your engine and cause damage...

could be a faulty thermostat, have it happen to me twice, was faulty from new. the temp would surge all the time and occasionally overheat. got another new one and never a problem again even years latter.

don't forget basics like shockers, ball joints and tie rod ends, they all work together to keep the tires on the road ;)
