just an update folks, I replaced the odometer gears, both the small one and the one on the back of the larger grey gear that the small one sits on. they were so soft, and the larger one just broke to pieces getting it off. surely they were not made that way, maybe the lubricant they put on...

I think I found the problem. on the passenger front door the white button on the switch is broken off, so it was always closing the circuit, as if the door was open. I pulled it out and it seems to be fine now. I will try dig one up at the wreckers and see how it goes. If it persists after that...
