Over time the gaskets will distort/perish. If they've ever been off before and not replaced with new ones that could also do it. Cheap and easy enough to replace them and see how you get on

It definitely sounds like the control for bi-level etc is the problem. Whenn your driving and it comes through it must be on outside air not recirculating. Its real similar to what my VK was doing. You need to see if theres little hoses on the back of your control. Ive only got a VK manual to...

If you move the control to demist or face does it stop coming in at your feet

The hoses are only the thickness of a pencil, theres three on the back of the A/C control panel

Im not sure about the VB but the VK vents are all vacuum controlled. My fan always ran and the controls didn't change demist/face/foot air till I got that sorted. Got all fan speeds back and A/C fan no worries

Have you checked that all the vacuum hoses are on behind the control panel. My VK was doing the same, one hose (pipe) was off the other was on the wrong post

You need VN heads to use the efi from a vn 304. Efi some people will say are more reliable, maybe, not necessarily, but IMO nothing sounds as tough as Holden Carby V8 at full song

I would buy the best that I could 6 or 8. in SA I can put a 350 from the era without any type of inspection. (lucky ay :) ) I wouldn't bother trying to get 300hp from a 253 when you could get much more from a 308 for much cheaper.
