Easier than on my suzuki sierra IMO, one of the most simple cars on the planet (if they can be called cars). Passenger side, remove a/b lid, undo cap, jiggle clip to loosen, remove bulb, insert new bulb, re-clip. Drivers side I did as well (bulbs lasted about 4 years, is this about right?)...

My new battery had a breather on either side, so what I did was plugged one and used the appropriate side. Ditching the tube by the PO is possible, can't say I would though. you might be able to score a new breather via a battery shop or ebay, or just make one.
