VN single handedly responsible for lowering greenhouse emissions since introduction

Actually talking about poisonous gas carbon monoxide, which is much reduced compared to old carby engines. People used to commit suicide by car exhaust fumes. But a VN would still spew out plenty of carbon dioxide.

Possible faulty temp sensor? 1994 VR V6 Commodore.

I had something like that. It was due to air in the system. A proper coolant bleed fixed the issue.

    Coolant

Yes I am aware of the specific heat issue, which affects how much heat the liquid can carry away. The best specific heat happens to be water and ammonia - simple molecules and everything longer like ethylene glycol is worse. I would never use that "waterless coolant" stuff which is very...

    Coolant

Yes anti-freeze is not needed in most of Australia. However, ethylene glycol also raises the boiling point a few degrees, so serves a useful purpose.

    VS Caprice

Are you sure the VIN is correct? Should be a letter between VS and 19. Y for Statesman or Z for Caprice.

VS Coolant leaking from gearbox area

Replacing the rear engine plate cost me $1645 back in 2020.

    removing srs/airbag

Sorry for digging up old thread, but recently I have seen Statesman/Caprices on Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace with aftermarket steering wheels. How are you going to register it? Even in states without inspection, if you got stopped for RBT, the cop should know vehicle came with airbags.

Keys ruined, or so I thought. Sharing my most recent drama.

I have 3 keys; I leave the bad key on table by the front door so burglars will grab it and not be able to drive off.

    Information

Broken pieces can be glued together with methyl methacrylate. Beware it is nasty stuff. But the crack will still be obvious if you want to restore it like new.

Is this site trustworthy for Eurovox Radio Codes ??

I got a security printout maybe 2 years ago and they didn't ask for any proof then. Anyway a few weeks ago somebody had a stack of old Eurovox on Facebook marketplace. But didn't have the codes, so I passed.

    Super Crap Auto brake pads

Changing the fronts, only thing available was the home-brand SCA pads. I pushed the piston back as far as it will go and put the pads in, but can't get them onto the rotor. I have done this before a few times. So I measured the pads: 15 mm thick, whereas Bendix are 14 mm. Thanks a lot Super...

VS III odometers still prone to failure?

I saw a series III for sale with only 125,000 km. So wondering if that is genuine. I know the series III had different cogs in the odometers. Do they break just as much as older VR-VS?

    Aftermarket door strikers available

So they look the same as VS door strikers, but the advert says VT-VZ. Is there some tiny difference?

    V6 performance upgrade?

different door actuator in some VS?

Mine is Series II, built July 97, just before end of Series II. So they started chucking in the VT parts before Series III?

different door actuator in some VS?

Needing a new driver's door acuator, I saw price $400 from new-old-stock merchants! Now the actuator was also used by Opel,Vauxhall and GM Brazil, so must be millions of them. I located a new actuator overseas for about A$100, thought I was clever. Then I find inside my door is an adapter cable...

I think the Stato needs 110 Amp because of the luxo options like power seats.

    The Lockdown Thread

I think Scomo is **** scared of losing the election, as an ALP government would quickly instigate a Royal Commission into the greatest disaster to hit Australia in my memory.

is door wiring harness the same all models?

Need to replace driver's door. Not much at the wreckers - only a VS2 Executive. I know one can transfer the power windows over, but what about the wiring harness? Did they use same for all levels, just left unused plugs?

vs esteem 25000ks on the clock at grays auction

    door locking problem

Remote buttons will lock and unlock doors. The snibs at top of door will lock or unlock doors. Turning key clockwise will unlock doors, but turning key anticlockwise does nothing. Is this an electrical fault, like broken wire between door and A-pillar? Or mechanical - one of the link rods coming...

could you have bought a WM Caprice new for $47k????

I was reading a report about a former lord mayor who was sacked for undeclared freebies. The report recommended that future mayors don't get given benefits such as limos. Buried further down, it said the ex-mayor's 2017 V6 Holden Caprice was purchased for $47,182.70 (drive-away price). I thought...

How much love is left for the VS

Not just old Commodores - watch the evening news: some joyrider steals an SSV or XR6, crashes it, or if they got away set fire to it. So the suppy dwindles.

    VS: sell or keep?

I am hanging onto one, but it's genuine 120,000 km and is in good nick: only the fan speed resistor needs changing. Your dad's sounds like it's too far gone. You would have to wait a long time before it becomes a restoration project.

    aircon fittings rusted on?

The aircon isn't very cold, so I call up a mobile service. He came out and said that filter-drier needs to be replaced, unfortunately it is rusted, and odds-on can't be removed without damaging the condensor or pipe. So he dosed it with penetrating oil, and said he will come back next weekend to...

    vs commodore

if you are shopping for a used VS, I would go for an Acclaim. It got the safety equipment, and would have been a "family car" and probably treated better than an Executive fleet hack or SS hoon car.

how many ex-Holden dealers have folded?

I just went past an empty yard that used to be City Motors, whom were one of the dealers dumped by GMH. Last time I went past, I noticed that there was a fair bit of space between the used vehicles they were selling. I used to get my Commodores serviced there, and was very happy with their workshop.

Can you get a replacement airbag for an old car (and has it been sitting on a shelf for 15 years anyway?)?

overheat one day, fine the next

Yesterday I was cruising down the highway, noticed the temp guage was almost at the H mark, so pulled over. We lifted the bonnet, the overflow container is half full and the serpentine belt is there. Ambient temperature was 30 at the most. So walked down to nearby coffee shop and had lunch. Came...

where to get type A relays?

Engine conked out a week ago. Eventually found it was a bad relay, by swapping relays around. Now the original Bosch relays are 4-pin normally open with resistor, but have the type A pinout. Now most places (Autobahn, Repco, Altronics et cetera) sell the type B relays. Even worse, one brand...

    195 HO engine?

I saw a WL Stato with for sale sign on a verge, so had a look. The seller claims it has the "195 HO" alloytec. Did the last production run get VE engines? Or perhaps the original engine failed and was replaced with one from wreckers. I doubt any tuners would bother with a mere 5 kW boost to a V6.

What bulbs for SSV fog lights

There is a regulation that fog lamps are limited to 30 Watts. I think that was written in the days of plain incandescent bulbs. You see lots of "fog lamp" bulbs on eBay, e.g. 15W LEDs that would be like 75W incandescent.

hot blip: air pocket or thermostat?

The old VS is just used a shopping cart nowadays. After warming up in the morning, the temperature gauge goes 3 marks above normal, then quickly settles back to normal. On return trip it does not, but the motor hasn't cooled down fully. I was told this is caused by air in the system. I have...

best place to buy Macpherson struts.

I need to replace the Macpherson struts. I wish to use the OEM (Monroe) part. Who would be cheapest: Holden dealer, Autobarn, Covs? I have seen bargains on eBay/Gumtree, but I presume they are cheap Chinese copies.

    boot gas strut brackets

I found one bracket hanging by a thread - most of the spot welds had popped open, First propped boot up as high as possible. I drilled two 6 mm holes in the bracket first, while it was sagging down. They need to be in the rear half of the bracket, i.e. nearest to the rear of the car. I got a...
