Sounds like your bottom end bearings are going out. Very common problem...

one of my window rubbers seems to have lifted. i was sure it was rusting underneath. when i checked it wasnt. i dont think these cars rot that much. have you checked its not just the rubbers being old

Check the small ujoint on steering shaft, have someone turn it and inspect its movement. should be evident if the situ reappears...
