    What's broken?

Update: New centerbearing, cv joint, rubber coupling, universal joints and balance ended up costing $1200  Speed sensor is working again (came unplugged somehow), speedo now working and car no longer stalling. Thanks everyone.

    What's broken?

I'll go ahead and add a new speed sensor to my shopping list. Hopefully that solves the problem.

    What's broken?

I currently have it booked in with DBS Perth - Total Drivetrain Solutions for next Tuesday so hopefully they will be able to sort things out. This thing has devolped a couple more issues (it never ends). The speedo started fluttering and then stopped working earlier today when I went to go and...

    What's broken?

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm going to try and get to DIYgarage next week to tackle a couple of other smaller jobs that are easier to do on a hoist, so I'll have a poke around then. As you say, maybe I'll get lucky, if not I currently have a booking to get it fixed in two weeks time.

    What's broken?

This problem occurred after I had the clutch work done. I don't want to point fingers, but could it be possible they forgot to put the spacers back in? Also, is it odd that thay didn't mention anything at the time about the driveshaft not being straight or the center bearing being stuffed?

    What's broken?

The trans code is M35 which I understand to be the getrag? The drivetrain specialists said they would need to get it up on the hoist to know for sure what needs doing, but quoted a little under $500 to replace center bearing and rebalance shaft or worst case scenario $1200 if the entire thing...

    What's broken?

Update: For those playing along at home, I took the vehicle to autobahn and they advised the centre bearing is absolutely stuffed. They also mentioned something odd, that my ute may have had a manual conversion as the driveshaft isn't sitting straight? I was under the impression it was a...

    What's broken?

Thanks for the info. I checked the video re: rooted centre bearing. I don't think that was my issue, what I experienced was much worse. The best way I can describe it is it was like a combination of a stack gym weights banging up and down whilst simultanously having the vehicle roll down a...

    What's broken?

Is that Joondalup Auto Care? if so, I'll give them a call tomorrow.

    What's broken?

Really? yikes. Any suggestions for a reputable alternative? I travel pretty much all over WA, so location doesn't really matter.

    What's broken?

I have had a couple of people suggest engine mounts, I had a look at them they look ok but truth be told I don't know what a stuffed one looks like. I'm having the thing booked in with Pedders for their Brake, Steering and Suspension check, I don't know if they check engine mounts but I'll...

    What's broken?

I'm not trying to argue with you, so please don't take it the wrong way but I can only speak from recent experience. I remember like 5 - 10 years ago, I could just go to my local supplier of whatever I wanted and have a chat and generally get a reasonable price and could trust their opinion on...

    What's broken?

I used to be like this but nowadays I like to shop around online and then contact the business with the best price (or most convenient location). Unfortunately my recent exeperiences have been that if I have to ask the price, it's not going to be competitive. Also, I have had some businesses...

    What's broken?

Usually I would agree with that sentiment but they are closed today. Should get a response to my quote request tomorrow morning. Edit: I am getting annoyed having to "contact for price" at most businesses these days though. Why is it so hard to list the price on your website?

    What's broken?

I was looking at the Bridgestone Turanza Serenity Plus as they are currently buy 3 get one free. Just waiting for the local store to get back to me with a price.

    What's broken?

Probably more of a sport tyre than I need but thanks for the suggestion. I'm currently leaning towards a set of BFGoodrich Advantage Control's but not sure if they're any good.

    What's broken?

Somewhat unrelated, but what's everyones go to tyre brand these days? Looking for a durable touring tyre in 235/45r17.

    What's broken?

Thanks for the replies. I know the brakes will need doing soon and the suspension is getting a bit old and tired. I think I'm going to book it in for a Brakes, Steering and Suspension check and go from there.

    What's broken?

No, it definately wasn't wheelspin related. Edit: Just to add, I have been down some pretty gnarly corrugated roads which rattle you to your core and the violent shaking this thing did was much much worse. And the banging was LOUD. It felt like a catastrophic failure of some sort which is why...

    What's broken?

Hey guys, A few days ago I had the strangest thing happen. I took off fairly aggressively in 1st gear and the car started shaking violently and making a loud banging noise. The thing felt like I was in a billy cart going down a flight of stairs. I quickly pulled over expecting to see...

    Alternative Fuel Pressure Regulator

Yea, pretty sure that was me. I never bothered pursuing it further as life got in the way. The Ute is now parked up pending a 304 swap.

    Alternative Fuel Pressure Regulator

I don't have much to add except that I had the same trouble back in 2018 trying to source a fuel pressure regulator for my 2000 series 3 Ute. Every reseller had no stock and the manufacturers were telling me it's a discontinued part. I ended up grabbing a second hand unit off of eBay. I was...

Improving the handling on a ute

I'm looking at giving my springs & shocks a freshen up and was thinking a drop of about 30mm lower than standard height (low?) would be nice visually given the increase from 15" to 17" wheels. I was looking at king springs and they are recommending a superlow spring for the front (KHFL-47SL)...

Wierd rattle/clunking/clicking sound after highway driving

Update: I couldn't find anything out of the ordinary under the back of the vehicle (it's actually all in surprisingly good condition considering the age). I picked up some new wheels and tyres (for cosmetic reasons) and noticed that the rotors were looking a bit rough and since I couldn't...

Wierd rattle/clunking/clicking sound after highway driving

Exhaust or lsd issues would be handy as I have good condition replacements on hand. Life has been getting in the way again but I hope to get under it next weekend and suss this whole thing out. When/if I fix this issue, I'll let you guys know what it was just incase someone else stumbles on...

Wierd rattle/clunking/clicking sound after highway driving

I don't have the paperwork handy so I'm not sure exactly when the brakes were done last, but it was around 12 months ago. Just thinking of the last trip where this happened, the sound was only really noticable when braking firmly (e.g. to turn a corner) but it was also present when I started...

Wierd rattle/clunking/clicking sound after highway driving

Thank you for the suggestions. I do have another ute here that I can salvage for parts so hopefully, whatever it is, won't cost too much to fix. This ute has cost me a small fortune lately but I refuse to be defeated.

Wierd rattle/clunking/clicking sound after highway driving

Hi guys, Every time I take my ute on highway trips of about 30 mins or more, when I come back down to residential speeds, and noticably when braking or reversing, there is a wierd rattle/clunking/clicking sound coming from somewhere in the rear. Once the vehicle is parked up and everything...

    Plug identification

Well, I put it all back together but unfortunately it’s pretty much cactus. I could probably bring this thing back to life but I think for the time/effort/money involved I would be underwhelmed with the results so i’m going to salvage what I can, scrap the rest and go with my original plan...

Hard to start - Leaky Injector(s)?

Just in case anyone was interested... I did manage to source another fuel reg and it didn’t solve the problem. I also replaced the coil packs and the engine ran better but it didn’t help with the starting issue. I was going to replace the dfi module however the one I ordered from Sparesbox...

    Plug identification

I guess I can always pinch the airbox from my v6 ute just for the sake of testing. My understanding is they both use the same maf. With some luck I might see the bits i’ve ordered in a week or so and then i’ll have a better idea of where I stand with this thing. Thanks guys
  32. S

    Plug identification

Does the intake air temp sensor need to be connected for the engine to run? This thing doesn’t currently have an airbox just a dodgy pod filter attached to the maf with some silicone hose. I’m more than happy to correct all these issues, but I really want to hear the engine run before I commit...

    Plug identification

Thanks for the heads up. I just ordered a cheapie off of eBay. I have no idea of the status of this engine so I’m trying to spend as little as possible at the moment just in case I decide to bail on this whole thing but if it does work, i’ll order a genuine Bosch part.

Excellent, thank you. Edit: It turns out i’m missing the ignition module - have ordered one now.

    Plug identification

Hey all, I picked up a wrecked 5l ute the other day in hopes of it being a donor vehicle for a future conversion. I’m currently in the process of putting it all back together to see if it all actually works but i’m having some difficulty identifying where some of the plugs are meant to go. I...

Hard to start - Leaky Injector(s)?

I put the old reg back on so at least it is driveable until I figure out what I want to do with this ute. I was planning to have the engine out in a couple of weeks to do the rear main seal, sump gasket, clutch + flywheel but I’m seriously considering just putting this whole thing on the back...

Hard to start - Leaky Injector(s)?

Well the new reg finally arrived... Bad news though, it doesn’t fit in the end of the fuel rail. The old reg is 10mm and the new one seems to be 12mm. Not sure what my options are at the moment. Thinking maybe just mounting a universal reg to the firewall and plumbing it inline with the dud...

Hard to start - Leaky Injector(s)?

Thanks for doing that, much appreciated. Looks to me like the only difference is the location of the vacuum line which is nothing really. Nowhere local sells these things so i’ll have to order one online. Just in case anyone else finds themselves in the same situation i’ll report back in...

Hard to start - Leaky Injector(s)?

The VR reg is a slightly different design but looks like it mounts very similarly (Mine had a philips head screw). I wouldn’t be surprised if it was interchangeable. The Haynes manual I have covers VN, VP, VQ, VR & VS, 1988 - 2000 yet only makes one mention of fuel pressure: 240 - 260 KPa at...
