    Close Call

Yeah we got ours back in 1999 because it was big and supposedly safe. Looking at the HIC ratings I don't think my wife will be driving it again, she already suffers from a MTBI as it is.

    Close Call

Slightly OT but thanks for these, showing them to my wife shortly. She has an emotional attachment to our old VS but I'm guessing her emotional attachment to our kids may be stronger and she'll feel better about upgrading. Is it just me or is there even deformation above the fuel filler below...

    WN Caprice - Delete Options?

Hey, the VS has headers and 'zorst, so must be somewhere up around the 700whp mark. If it had a cop chip and red coil packs too I'd never get rid of it. As it is I'll miss the soft mooing sounds and "skwee-skwee-skwee-skwee-skwee-skwee.." of every pulley when it's been raining, as well as the "I...

    WN Caprice - Delete Options?

Looking around I'm getting that feeling myself, I suspect they're all gone in NZ. :( Thanks gents.

    WN Caprice - Delete Options?

Fair point, I've never bought new before myself so warranties are a bit of a novelty. I'm more used to fixing things when they break, that's something else I'd have to get over until after the warranty runs out. Generally we buy a near-new car and run it into the ground, hence still rocking...

    WN Caprice - Delete Options?

Probably looking for a unicorn here but I figure you guys will know better than me. With the WN Caprice rapidly running out of time we're considering grabbing a new one. Effectively our ideal car would be a LWB V8 Executive (in the old parlance) as we want the leg room and the lazy grunt...

    Annoying parking dent prevention??

I just stopped caring, it's quite liberating. I even let the mother-in-law drive it. I did pull a dent out of the left rear quarter panel one day (wife had parked it against a pole so hard it looked like drift damage) and the kids got quite upset, so I said they could have it there for 3 more...

Rear Leg Room: A Question for the Lofty Gentlemen

Our son has just turned 10 years old and is already over 5ft tall, so we suspect he's going to end up somewhere around 6ft 5in. Accordingly our old VS Equipe beater is rapidly going to become more and more cramped in the back for him. This seems like as good an excuse as any to invest in...

    When does acceleration become 'uncomfortable'

And that's the crux of it right there. Doing 0-100 in under 3 seconds on a bike is different because you're hunkered forward on the bike, and while you're (hopefully!) wearing a helmet that adds weight to your head, you're also exerting the forces more in line with your neck and spine, thereby...

    Shift kits

Before we can provide a suitable answer, please clarify the following: - What changes have the stage 3 racing chip made, and who supplied it? - What are the "other mods"?

    2018 Commodore announced

I'd say Supercars (the category) will keep the same chassis layout since they're already a silhouette formula, the only major engineering change will be swapping to a V6T from a V8. So same/similar chassis to current, new panels, new engine. It's not like V8SC has consisted of converted road...

    Share your health battles

Spondylosis (spinal osteoarthritis) here. Basically my back's knackered, but I've done so much damage to it over the years I can't tell the difference. I've been warned I'm a bee's twanger away from developing sciatica as well but meh, can't slow down just cos something's sore.

    If you had the chance.....

Late to the party since I forgot my username (d'oh), but... I wouldn't go back. My childhood was pretty crap, surrounded by a family with varying levels of alcohol and drug addiction, broken marriages, violence and so on. I was first exposed to drugs when I was 4 years old and given my first...

    Commodore GTR

It's yet another "stickers 'n' wheels" deal where Holden NZ try and bump up the price by adding nothing of real substance (except the wheels in this case). We've had all sorts of stuff over the years, like the VN GTS that was just a V6 with some pinstripes and whatnot.

    Holden's vision of the future

Like Calaber I'm now at the point where my body is breaking down, I've been diagnosed with spondylosis (spinal osteoarthritis) and apparently sciatica isn't far off as well if I don't watch out. This means I'll probably be looking to move to a vehicle with easier access, so an SUV is likely to...

    Ecotec Belt/Pulley Squeal

Check the tensioner assembly, you may find the internal spring has collapsed and is pushing the belt out slightly. Pick up a new one from Holden for not-very-much and swap it out yourself. It'll also give you the perfect reason to do a coolant flush at the same time since you have to pull out a...

    Never meet your heroes!

Touche, I'm a young 42yo so my kiddie dream era was the late-'70s to mid-'80s. Dad had an SLR5000 which was pretty sweet, and later a Riley Elf, which was hilarious watching a 6ft 2in man fold himself into a sardine tin, and also a 1969 Capri that was a beautiful machine. My grandfather had a...

    Never meet your heroes!

For me it was always the General Lee. And Daisy Duke, of course... Personally I prefer the more analog feel of older cars, I don't want to be isolated from what's going on, be it good or bad. Our newest car is from 2004 and has most of the bells and whistles but I still get a weird kick out of...

Advice on tracking down family of deceased former girlfriend - NSW.

Whatever you do, I'd ditch any thought of mentioning being in a relationship with her. Consider her a good friend from the past, nothing more. Seems to me you were about 16-18 years old back then, correct? Youthful flings were fun (from memory...) but I reckon none of them were ever as deep and...

    End of Holden?

I'm currently trying to pick the sweet spot as to which model Commodore to buy that will last longest, be easiest to DIY on and have most aftermarket support once the doors are shut. I know it'll be LS-powered but I don't know if straying into VE-VF will introduce too many possible electrical...

Screw that, I can rego and insure both the VS and our 2004 Nissan Stagea, and get a WOF on both of them for about a grand.

    470kW LS9 Commodore is happening.

Anyone expecting AMG refinement from a tarted up taxi with a big donk is going to be disappointed. Anyone expecting a barrel of fun from a tarted up taxi with a big donk is going to love it. Personally I'd never buy a new or late model AMG/M/RS Audi because I hate cars that have more smarts than...

    Vr key remote

Only slightly off-topic...I took my dead VS battery to the local key cutter to enquire about replacing the battery, he was of the opinion that the battery should recharge over time if I drive with it. Is this fact or just buttock conversation? I have a few long drives coming up so I guess I can...

    What is this badge from?

Can't see any badges like it on a Roadpacer, and I wouldn't expect Mazda to have any reference to GMH on their cars. I suspect it's a badge someone has made up after putting a Holden engine into a Mazda body.

    Career Change

Well I've also started making inroads to my career change too, but it's slightly more complicated. I've sold a house to free up some funds for a deposit on some land, and started looking around the area to get a feel for what areas are frost-prone etc. Trouble is, I've also just been told...

What's the best all round Nineties Commodore?

Engines are... VN-VR = Known as "Buick 3800". You've got one in your Transit, but bear in mind there's Series I and series II engines, which differ. VS-VY = Ecotec, a Buick 3800 pretending to be refined. I reckon you want one of these. VZ-onwards = Alloytec. You probably don't want one of these.
  35. H

    Whats a good size rim?

^This, or 18x8s with 235/40s if you want more shiny and less black. IMO 19s and over on VN-VS make them look like roller skates.
  36. H

What's the best all round Nineties Commodore?

The Ecotec is just an evolution of the Buick 3800 in the VN-VR, there's nothing complicated about it, even I can wrench on mine. You can fix an alarming number of faults with a selection of hammers and an appropriate level of swearing. if you can deal with a Buick, you can deal with an Ecotec...

    470kW LS9 Commodore is happening.

I wouldn't buy it. If I wanted 470kw+ I'd start with a used LS1/2/3-powered car and spend thousands getting there, and still have tens of thousands left over to buy something that actually will appreciate in my lifetime, like an RB-series Skyline GTR. Without a racing pedigree I'm just not that...

    Career Change

I've been in IT for 22 years now and I'll admit I'm on a very good income. However, I can see the time coming when my role disappears or changes significantly, and I don't want to stay in IT, I'd rather take the 6-figure payout and retire early (I'm 42). As I've got older I find I get a lot...

Car value in the coming years

I reckon a manual VS GTS/Senator 215i would be a cracker of an investment, I'd pick up one myself but I'd never be able to resist modifying it and driving it everywhere. We're going to hang onto our VS bomb and run it into the ground though. As for BMXs, I looked up the price of them so my kids...

2009 VE SSV vs 2007 BF MKII XR6 Turbo. Which one would you choose?

Your question is which one would I choose so...I'd keep the VE, because one can never have too much boot space when one has a family. Plus, being a long-running model with an LS-based engine it's unlikely to ever run out of spare parts, and I have a habit of keeping cars until they fall...
