water can leak thru the windscreen surrounds due to rust, this water often finishes up on front carpet below dash, the door drain holes may be blocked
doors are removed by removing hinge pins, these are hollow so it may seem they a rent there
good luck
the executive may have had it, all plastic on the VL is now brittle and breaks easily, including that lid
it was attached to a metal hinge at the rear, and so lifted up
the bumper bars break easily so park carefully
cant find 1 anywhere, its different to the sedan, fits VL wagon only
new or SH, not too badly effected by the sun ( makes them brittle)
I am at seaford, near Melbourne
[email protected]
failing air intake monitors are common, check for rust around front and back windows and in floor of sedan
melting electricals are common
don't add a turbo, its the fashion but the extra power is dangerous
fit an immobiliser as they are stolen often
fuel comes from engine fuel return pipeto tank then thru rubber hose in tank to bottom of swirl pot, if this hose is damaged I don't think it could be reapired as it cant be got at in the tank
bottom of pump with attached filter bag most sit down in swirlpot, bag mustn't hit the side of...
Ive used several radiator caps but all have been tight and difficult to turn on and off. grease or oil helps a bit for a while.:rofl2:
however the metal ring that the cap pressure seal sits down on is soft on my VL and gradually goes out of shape, allowing water loss due to the cooling system...
if it fails the fan will still turn but the factory air cond wont work properly due to the cooling system overheating. the aux electric radiator fan will come on but it wont be able to keep things cool enough
the fault isn't with the air cond, its the radiator fan clutch, sometimes leaking...
is there any way to reduce the swept arc of the wipers, its now too large, due to wear, I suspect
Ive fitted shorter wiper blades which helps but not enough
you need a new auto trans vacuum modulator as the diafram in it has split, allowing the trans fluid to be sucked up into manifold and burned buy from repco etc but not a holden dealer
its located at side of trans, follow vacuum pipe down to it, easy to replace
a common problem
look for an unsupported section of rubber fuel hose that may be kinking almost shut when heated by warm air coming back from engine, then unkinking when allowed to cool down
any original tail light lenses probably still look OK but will be very weak and brittle, shattering easily when knocked slightly, seems the plastic is effected by the sun, wonder if holden always knew this would happen
cheap nasty clear plastic lines always rot, causing petrol smell with full fuel tank
I replaced mine with rubber fuel hose of about the same size, did them 1 at a time, the rubber thing attached to filler pipe is a reservoir for vapour, etc
the main fan has a temperature sensitive clutch and this can eventually fail, some skill is needed to diagnose this, happened to me, I fitted a replacement clutch and all OK, sometimes leaking silicone is visible
i always look for a rubber washer, not 2.
also the outer casing was very soft when I drove a screw driver thru it, suggesting risk of holes caused by rocks thrown up from below. a bad oil filter could wreck an engine
google "ryco oil filter problems" and be prepared for a long read
I recently put a replacement ryco oil filter on my VL 6cyl and the filter wouldnt tighten enough to properly compress the rubber ring so eventually it started leaking the oil out.
it was chinese, ryco z145A
luckily I managed to get home
Ive had problems with australian made ryco filters, with...
I was told that my VL needed a new steering rack but eventually an honest steering machanic told me many racks were replaced needlessly due to wrong diagnosis, he said a rack would fail gradually with plenty of warning
my problem turned out to be caused by a thrown balance weight on a front wheel
the VL wagon rear bumper bar is different from the sedan rear bumper bar.
I cant find a wagon rear bumper on the internet
a second hand one would probably be too brittle from exposure to the sun
can anyone help?
It seems that every plastic part on the VL has gone brittle and so breaks easily
such as bumper bars, centre console, dashboard:rofl2:
so did holden save money on cheap and nasty plastic, or does this deterioration get caused to all old cars plastic from the sunlight? come to think of it...
this has, I think, 3 metal springs
2 wire springs of differern colors that control the self cancelling, these eventually break but can be easily replaced, as holden dealers do or did stock them
a flat metal silver spring that also eventually can break and is easy to replace upside down...
thanks everyone,
its probably some oilseal as the leak stopper liquid worked before for a while. Ive added another bottle. Its too difficult for me to work out which oilseal is leaking
the cam belt is about3600 km old and I remember some oilseal being found to be leaking and being replaced then
my VL 6 cyl auto has an engine oil leak that leave a puddle of engine oil on the garage floor. the oil level on dipstick goes down slightly
previously the leak was stopped by adding some leak stopper to engine oil, suggesting perhaps a leaking oil seal, but now about 1 year later, the leak is...
some VLs have front disc and rear drum brakes, mine does and I was disapointed by the long travel and spongy pedal and hoped getting the system bled would improve it
however, a veteran brake mechanic said the spongy pedal was normal with rear drum brakes as holden, to save money had fitted a...
my VL wagon had a steering wobble, mechanic drove car and said needs a new steering box
an honest steering mechanic said unlikely as they dont fail without plenty of warning
more investigation revealed a missing balance weight, all symptoms stopped with its replacement
the steering box is...
