    Subs in wagon

Depends on lots of variables, including the local air temp and pressure (alters the speed of sound). The idea is to get all the sounds from the different speakers to arrive at the listening position at the same time and in phase, as explained above. Because of the length of the wavelenth of low...

Power Cable Through Firewall of VY

My vt certainly has a grommet for the loom. The best place is down under the brake booster, there is a rubber plug with no hole in it that blocks the hole used for the clutch stuff in a manual. Remove it and make a hole in it, put it back and run the cable through it. Rca's can go with remote...

    Sub and amp

Every install is different. The inline fuse should be as close to the battery as possible. This is a good site for install info: http://www.bcae1.com/ If you have specific questions, then we can normally help. That hu doesn't seem to exist, google couldn't find it anyway. Couldn't find any...

    FM Radio Reception

Something like this maybe: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/LUCAS-AM-FM-AUDIO-SIGNAL-BOOSTER-NEW_W0QQitemZ270016332636QQihZ017QQcategoryZ1498QQcmdZViewItem My jvc in my vt is ok, probably not as good as the original, but i hardly ever use the radio anymore. I've noticed that my standard HU vx work car...

    making a high pass filter....

 Hi Phreddy. No, just 2 ways at this stage. Then a single active sub, with inbuilt adjustable xover, to fill in the lower octaves. It's for music not ht use. Yeah, it's a great feeling when you DIY, very satisfying. Since i upgraded the car stereo, i can't listen to my existing...

    Rampage subs

Another well regarded entry level 12" sub is the pioneer tsw-306c. Can be had for around the $100-120 mark each, sometimes less. JB stock them. There is also a 10" version. Don't get the pioneer recommended sealed box for them though, they work better in ported boxes.

    Questions Re:Dvd Installation

What brand/model is the head unit? Normally you would use the amp to power the sub and fronts and run the rears directly off the hu. Realise however that the stock speakers are only rated at 15wrms. They are not meant to be amped. Anyway if the smoke comes out of them, you have an excuse to...

    Sub and amp

You may be better off asking specific questions. What are the models of the sub and amp? How big is the power wire that goes to the existing amp? Is the new amp going to be mounted near the existing one? What headunit are you using? Does it have sub out rca connectors? You may want to...

    spilts vs full range

No, don't bother. If you don't want to spend much, consider jaycar carbon fibre splits @~$150, jvc also make a set that retail for ~$199, that are good for the money apparently. Focal, hertz, mbquart and maybe morel also make entry level splits that will s**t all over any of the mainstream...

    spilts vs full range

The vdo-dayton splits that i've heard have sounded ok, pretty good for the money i would say. Can't remember which model though. Are you sure everything is setup correctly? As Stonex said, how are they crap? What is the model No.? What amp are you using for them?

    making a high pass filter....

Yep, what Phreddy said. I would check the dc resistance of the tweeter with a multimeter. This can give a clue as to it's nominal impedance. It is important to now this to even guess at the required value for a xover cap. To make an accurate choice, you need to know the impedance...

    making a high pass filter....

10k Hz would be ok if the tweeters were for "ambient" use. i.e. an extra tweeter to boost only the very high frequencies to fill in gaps in the frequency response up high. They can also be used to correct staging/imaging issues. Most mid woofers will not play well up to 10k Hz. Most car...

    splits all round?

Yeah, as everyone else has said, one quality set of front splits only. One set of ~$450 speakers will own three sets of $150 ones for sound quality, if not loudness as well. Splits are all about the ability to mount the tweeters and mids separately to get the best "imaging" and "staging" etc...

    alpine type-x speakers. opinions?

Have you heard them? The type x are nice speakers, if you like the sound of them. IMHO there are better sounding splits out there for the money. Or equal quality for less. Not bagging alpine, they are very high build quality and if you like the sound they are a good choice. Make sure you listen...

    Overheating Jaycar response amp

My 4x100, driving front splits and a sub, gets too hot to keep your hand on it for very long after cranking for a while. Always has, still going strong after more than a year. I don't worry about it anymore. Class ab amps are not very efficient. A lot of the power that the amp draws does not...

I got my new stereo :)

I ran some enclosure calculations for one of their 15" subs once, not sure which exact one now, but it was basically unsuitable for car use. From memory, Its specs demanded a huge sealed box. For optimum flat response i think it was in the hundreds of cubic feet. Basically it might have suited...

Good Buy You Tell Me ??

The voice coil configuration will determine that. Depends on the impedance of the sub. Just a case of finding the right deal. A secondhand jaycar amp or similar would be my choice ~$150. Again, depending on the sub impedance.

    Sub and amp question

Hi, welcome to the forum. You need to tell us what brand and model subs at least. You should also tell us what size/tuning the enclosure is. What music you listen to? Do you want the best quality sound (sq), daily driver, max loud (spl)? What does the rest of your system consist of? i.e...

Good Buy You Tell Me ??

There are plenty of cheap amps around. The w3, if thats what it is, likes ~300-500 wrms to really go off. It wil probably be loud enough (in a ported box) with ~150 wrms for daily use. Look on ebay and the for sale forum threads...trading post.. etc. The specs of the actual sub will determine...

This is a really big discussion on the subject, http://www.caraudioaustralia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=50295 Check out the technical article at the top of the first thread. Another set of splits that have a good rep at the moment are digital designs (DD) can't remember the number, $329...

Yep, thats the go. Bit by bit and get the best quality stuff (in your opinion) you can fit in your budget. Make a cd of your favorite tracks and go audition some splits. VS Sound Advice

Put the 5s in the rear or some cheap 6-6.5 inch coax and run them off the head unit. Get some decent 6-6.5 inch splits for the front and a 4 channel amp to run them and the sub. You won't miss the rears. IMO, the front splits are by far the most important thing in the system. Everything else...

Good Buy You Tell Me ??

Probably something like a 12w3v2 then. http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_subs.php?series_id=12 These used to be ~$500 rrp, they have just been superceded by the v3 model. So around $350 would be about right now. There are three versions, all dual voice coil, 2 ohm, 4 ohm, 6 ohm. Once you know...

Good Buy You Tell Me ??

What model JL audio sub is it? i.e. w0, w1, w3, w6, w7. They retail from around $200 to over $2k. There is no "comp" model as such. Anyway, any of them are certainly worth $80 IMO. One of the nicest sounding subs around. Made in the USA build quality. Make sure that it has a common or...

    NEW sub wiring help

On or off, whatever sounds best to you. Just adjust the gain properly with it the way you want. i.e. If you set the gain with bass boost off then turn it on without readjusting the gain, you may cause the amp to clip at a lower volume. This is not good for your sub. Personally, I prefer to use...

    Audio System

Audition whatever splits you can from focal, boston acoustics, hertz, mb quart, morel. Digital designs make some great ones now too so i hear. These are all superior to the mainstream brands IMHO. There are others too of course, but @~$300 those above shine. You will need an amp to power decent...

    Sealed, Ported and Distortion

Which sites say that? What type of "distortion"? More the other way round I think. Sealed enclosures are usually chosen when sound quality is paramount. Ported are louder but generally less accurate. This is not really distortion though, more "colouration". Perhaps it's because the sealed...

VN Alpine stereo - serious upgrade - I need feedback please!!

I have never bothered to "run in" speakers/subs. By the time the system tuning is close to right, they have spent enough time at reasonable volume. Never had an issue. Get the gains/levels right and all should be fine. I think some speakers/subs definatly seem to sound better after a bit of...

how many sub can i run of this amp

What semi said x2. Also. Is your current sub in the optimum enclosure? Getting the most out of what you have is the best option to start with. Most 15" subs need large enclosures, two need twice as much. How much space do you have available? How big is your current enclosure? Is it sealed or...

    NEW sub wiring help

I believe you. I looked at it on the web. When i checked the sub and amp specs for those you posted. Just seemed a bit strange at first. Marketing? More is better? Anyway, as long as you like it, nothing else matters. Just be careful not to let the smoke out. Cheers

    NEW sub wiring help

Two sets of terminals for one voice coil, LOL. The amp is claimed to produce 400wrmsx2@2ohms, so 800wrms into four ohms bridged. Significantly overpowering your sub. Be careful with the gain control and volume and it will be fine. Max out the gain and/or volume and the smoke will come out.
  36. phree

how many sub can i run of this amp

Budget? Because the subs are dual 2 ohm, you should wire them with the coils in series and the subs in parallel. This will provide a two ohm load to the amp. The 800wrms@1ohm jaycar mono would be good on a budget, still makes enough power into two ohms. Or for nicer brand name gear, something...

    Budgeting for new system

Sometimes less is more. I agree with semi. If you are thinking $1000 splits then you're going to want to budget for something like that again for the sub/s. Otherwise the splits will be outstanding and the sub/s average. I find one good 10" in the correct ported box, fed the right power, works...

    NEW sub wiring help

To better answer your question, What are the model No. of your sub and amp? Your new dvc sub has two voice coils hence two sets of terminals. Normally, these must all be connected to operate the sub properly. Need to know what the sub and amp are to help.

    sub channel

Yeah, depends if the hu xover suits. Some have fixed, some are variable. Some of the fixed ones are limited. Some are good. They are likely to be as good or better than the jaycar amp xover. If necessary, the amps low pass filter does a good job. If you want to use the remote level control, i...

    box help

Add about 4~5l for those 2 subs would be about right. This is added to the net volume shown in winisd to get the gross volume of the box. In the case of ported boxes, you need to allow for the port volume as well. Then comes the dimensions, sometimes constrained to some extent, and finally the...
