Led headlight can bus ? VY series 2

And lets not forget there are plenty of illegal halogens out there as well such as Phillips Crystal and Diamond Vision, and basically everything else that is not marked as road legal. Where you have a separate High Beam globe, stick whatever you like in there as it's a dedicated driving/spot...

VX S pak shock absorbers: Suggestions?

G'day mate, yes, the Brother in-law went with the GT-Sports and Lowered King Springs on a VYII Calais...ridden in and driven it many times. I view it as a very good combination which can be achieved at a very reasonable price point. He used Lowered King Springs and it eventually settled about...

Led headlight can bus ? VY series 2

Do other road users a favour and don't be one of those ass clowns running illegal low beam LED or HID in lamps not designed for them. Good point above regarding legality and rest assured, insurance companies will take any chance they get to void ones cover. Call up your insurance company and...

New member first posting VT commodore 1999 key issue

Recalling an old story from a mate who also had issues getting a new key programmed...my memory may be off but I'll put it out there in case it helps any future readers. From memory, mate had a locksmith copy current key, goes to car, does the programming procedure, new key works, but the old...

VX S pak shock absorbers: Suggestions?

GT Gas have standard pistons for standard height suspension, the GT Sport have a shortened piston for lowered suspension. Assuming you have FE2 on the S pak, your springs should be one to one and a half inches lower than standard, and therefore you might want to be looking at the GT Sport. Might...

what grade of oil to use 230000km service

Yep, funny looking back at the old advice. Original Ecotec motor just crossed 340000km. Still running amazingly smooth. Was running Nulon 10W40 Full Synth with no issues other than a half litre top up between changes. Switched to Penrite 10W40 Semi-synth at 320000km, no changes to how it runs...

    Wiring and amp questions

Spud, I have the same amp, they are good units.......4 channel amp for 4 speakers, just connect the speakers as normal, you will have 100W RMS to each speaker. The amp will give you plenty and it won't be working hard or getting hot.

    Shadow tone recent sales

Pure 80s class, spent 8yrs in a VH SL/E 5.0L Cabernet over Mercury Shadow Tone. It was stock barring 1" lowered suspension, the colour combo was stunning. Thought I got good money getting $3000 for it in 2002, I guy from Dungog was pretty happy to get it. The two tone looked a treat too on 80s...

Power windows slow to go up and down

Did you use Dry Lube? Normal WD40 or Silicone based sprays help but don't last too well. Any PTFE marked spray is the ticket.

    Utter confusion about trans coolers

In pure standard form all autos are piped to run fluid through a cooling tank within the radiator assy. As an option (recommended for towing or high performance) you will see an additional (external) cooler plumbed in as well. These are generally connected in line with the fluid going through...

    Noisy Drivers Door Window

My VT has had the same issue for the last 5 years or so.....both front windows rattle (in line with vertical suspension movement) when fully wound up, no damage on the doors or seals. I just manage it by ever so slightly cracking them down from the full up position which stops all window...

Power windows slow to go up and down

A much overlooked item when it comes to maintenance. The window tracks collect lots of dirt, grime and general contaminates as time passes, this is what slows down your glass. A simple clean and dry lube is the first order of business.

    Best *looking* Commodore model?

As far as an entire series goes, Holden really had it together with the VT program.....and the sales prove it. They do need the wing spoiler though to enunciate the rear styling. In terms of my favourite specific model in pure factory released styling.......always loved the Brock VL Group...

    VT Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement

Having done this before you can also push the pipe in too far which will cause a leak. Be gentle when re-fitting the heater pipe, you can feel when the o'ring grips up and seals.

    Drivers side suspension making noises?

For fault isolation, work your way through the radius rod, link rod and control arm bushings loading them up with silicone spray. Work through one at a time over a week or so, if the noise shuts up after a silicone dose you will have the culprit.

    Headlight globes

I trust you only have them in a dedicated high beam lens, otherwise just another motorist using non-legal globes.

    Headlight globes

I have found Osram Cool Blue Intense to be one of the better halogen bulbs. At 4200K they are road legal and a significantly better than standards in my VT. Good prices on eBay. Don't touch Narva, have had a few of their bulbs and they never last more than 9 months in my experience.

    Vz engine oil

Have had no issues running synthetic in an Ecotec, either Nulon 10W40 or Penrite 10W50 is what I use, I get the cheapest of the two. Coming up on 300K mileage on original motor, runs as good as it did new. A quick check of the Nulon Netlube webpage shows they recommend 5W30 for VZ with a note...

VX commodore wheels and rims help

The speedo cal can be adjusted to any of the available factory combinations at the time of manufacture with a Tech 2 scanner or similar after-market as used by a lot of independents. Holden market share in free fall.

The writing is clearly on the wall, it's only a matter of time before GM pulls out all together. The reality is the Aussie RHD market is one of the smallest globally and GM won't keep a presence for the sake of posterity. Their markets are China and North America in that order, they have already...

Holden market share in free fall.

Holden set up their fate when they heavily invested into the VE platform. It was clear to anyone with a brain back then that large sedans were finished as popular sales choice, consider the total sales of VT/VX versus VE/VF, if only they had pumped that billion or so dollars into a mid-size...

300k on one set of struts?

New struts will transform your car, would also be looking closely at the link rod, control arm and radius rod bushes. Seeing you have to R&I the springs if doing the struts, given the age of the car I'd give it new springs too. Unlike other repairs, at least when you do suspension you can feel...

The pain of no A/C or the pain of the repair cost

My Nov 99 Berlina still has all original Climate Control components (incl heater core) and still functions 100%. 293000km. About three years ago I had the AC serviced, it was working fine, I just did it because it was 15yrs old, figured it would like some new gas as it had never been touched...

Pioneer head unit in the VXII and Aerial

To take care of this properly you need an on/off for the power wire (antenna remote signal) and a three position rocker switch for the antenna trim earth wires. Right now your Pioneer Blue/White wire through the AERPRO harness will be supplying 12v constant to your antenna remote wire which...

    VS electric aerial issue

The trim (up/down) buttons in the dash are earth switches that apply earth to the respective side of the antenna motor to drive up or down for trimming/manual adjustment. The power to the antenna motor does not come from the stereo, the motor draws power from the broader system. What comes from...

    REAR MAIN SEAL LEAK

Don't worry about it unless you are topping off the oil often or you are messing up the driveway/garage floor. Stop leak.....won't hurt it but as usual the smaller the leak the more effective they are. Could also consider using a heavier grade oil in an old Commy, 20W50/60, thicker oil leaks less.

Heater tap leaking or something else?

If the heater tap is bad you will generally see it clearly looking at the tap, there will be evidence of coolant leak and maybe some white crust/crystals around the leak. Are you referring to a puddle of clear liquid on the driveway? Could just be your air-con drain, my VT dumps tons of water...

    Transmission flush, yes or no

Don't bother unless you are having issues or the old fluid looks horrendous, which it probably won't if you have kept current with servicing in the past. The tranny is near bulletproof if not abused and routine maintenance is followed.

    Front seatbelt replacement

No frays in the belt, check it retracts and snap it outwards to ensure it locks with inertia. There is no shortage of Commodores in parts breakdown that are not major accident victims. Busted strut top but need to get car to mech

Had this twice years ago on a VR Berlina. Paid Bowers in Newcastle plenty of cash for new struts and springs. Clowns never put the washers back in on reassembly and over time first the left front, then the right both popped the piston up through the strut top mounts. On each occasion I kept...

What fits VS Series 2 indicator stalk with cruise

So I can verify that VS Series II stalks are common with VT's. Years ago I was scrapping a 1997 VS Series II Berlina, as it was going to the metal recycler's I pulled out the stalks to keep as spares for my VT. I have since fitted that VS stalk into my Series II VT Berlina.......plug n' play...

Steam coming out air vents when vehicle stationary

That's definitely a blocked A/C drain, if you don't want to get under the car with a wire coat hanger many a mechanic would do that for free or very little. As to the heater core it's a big bucks repair but noting the age and value of a typical VT I would try one of the trade level engine block...

    Air-conditioner no blow cold

Best bet is to go to an A/C shop and have it serviced ($200-$300). They will refill the gas with dye and get it running again, test for obvious leaks and send you on your way to come back in a few weeks to re-assess. If it's a major leak you will run out of gas quickly but they will know what...

    Aftermarket Amp Power Cable

No mate, there are micro amps available that you can wire into your factory audio circuit, however anything else needs a dedicated power wire direct from the battery, with an inline fuse as close as possible to the battery (max 1ft cable to fuse). Note the amp fuses job is to protect the amp, it...
