After mechanic fixed the streering rack turning wheels a bit rough

No cost to me of course. well,3rd time i went there they said 'see how you go' pretending to be busy with other customers. Then I called them and they started the conversation saying 'the reason is you do not drive your car enough to get rid of the air'. I said you know it was not done properly...

After mechanic fixed the streering rack turning wheels a bit rough

It must be.........as you said, they (themselves) wouldn't have suggested to replace it

After mechanic fixed the streering rack turning wheels a bit rough

Alright, took it back to them and this time they changed the steering rack (again). They are using an after market one replacing the one they installed when i repaired it first time. There is some air in the system which I hope will disappear when I keep driving the car, but it is much better...

After mechanic fixed the streering rack turning wheels a bit rough

After mechanic fixed the streering rack turning wheels a bit rough

Thanks. of course, I do not keep the steering locked to any side for long. The noise and roughness is when I turn the wheel to the extent to park the car. Even then, I do not get to the stage that wheels are locked.

After mechanic fixed the streering rack turning wheels a bit rough

that was the term they used. when the engine is running and the car is not moving, the engine is not running as smooth as it used to be. Not literally vibrating per se. when the wheels are turned close to max, there is a sound and slight vibration. one of the mechanics there told me he...

After mechanic fixed the streering rack turning wheels a bit rough

I paid them good money to get the job done. I didn't see the need for me to bleed it myself and if I did (and did not work) they will say i stuffed it up. gave them the car back (to bleed the system) while i went for a walk for a couple of hours. when I picked it up it was the same! (vibrating...

After mechanic fixed the streering rack turning wheels a bit rough

I had a leak from the steering rack and gave it to the mechanic to fix and he told me he replaced the pressure hose too. I pick it up today and just turning out of the workshop and I feel that steering is not smooth, a bit rough when i turn close to the max. Not heavy, not vibrating, it just...

    Overfilled the oil

The service book says 4.8Litre approximate with filter. Now, I use a larger filter than holden's. I use K&N HP-2001 which has more capacity.

    Overfilled the oil

Totally agree with you. Now, would Holden have factored in the oil level 10 minutes after the engine reached its operating temperature? who knows?
  11. M

    Overfilled the oil

ok, I have checked the oil level again. here is the pic and I checked the other side of the dipstick, it was corresponding to where you can see the level in the pic. I measured with a tape and it was 20mm above the FULL. Now the Holden manual states : add 50 ml of oil for each millimetre...

    Overfilled the oil

Thanks, will check again and report

    Overfilled the oil

I checked it few times...... I didn't think I added too much, but again, maybe I did? Holden manual says: When topping up the engine oil, allow approximately 10 minutes for the oil added to fully drain into the oil pan. (bold and underline added)

    Overfilled the oil

    Thanks :) It's a VX commodore

    Overfilled the oil

I checked the oil level and it was a bit low under FULL. That was when the car was at operating temperature and I checked it 10 min after I switched off the engine. (now I realise the mistake i made); I topped a bit of oil and immediately checked the dipstick, it didn't appear to have changed...

    Noisy engine at cold start

Now that I know the problem, should i just replace the racks? Brand new vs refurbished? Should I also change the pump? Should I also change the hose?

    Noisy engine at cold start

worked out the problem. and it was right in front of me! The steering racks were leaking!

    Noisy engine at cold start

10W-40 Nulon full synthetic Originally I thought it was related to the oil and it was overdue for an oil change. Changed the oil and filter, the same noise.

    Noisy engine at cold start

Thanks lowandslow :) The sound does not increase when I rev it.

    Noisy engine at cold start

When I start the engine, there is this noise that start a bit louder and as the engine gets to normal operational temperature it becomes much less noisy. Drove the car for some 15 km and i almost did not hear that noise at all? What is causing this issue?

    VX coolant

If you are worried about Adelaide water, flush it with demineralised water. Fill up with demineralised water, run until it reaches normal engine temp and then flush the radiator. May repeat until the demineralised water runs clean. Then use the coolant you want, it will be then mixed with...
  25. M

    VX coolant

the problem is; the engine will have some of the cheap coolant unless you remove the knock sensors (which is too much hassle). You go and mix it with the expensive good coolant causes problems. Better flush with water

    Stuck oil sump plug

I do not want to forget thanking greenacc for his good advice and help. Thanks greenacc. Appreciate it. Thanks. I replaced the plug with a new one. It was a genuine Holden one. I am not impressed with the quality as it can easily be rounded. My plan is buy a new one before my next oil change...

    Stuck oil sump plug

which part of someone else tighten the plug up you do not understand?
  30. M

    Stuck oil sump plug

probably because you never gave the car to the dealer for an oil change. there you go; i paid a mechanic to change the oil and now am stuck with his stuff up. good. You are lucky, whoever changed the oil for your car (mechanic or not) had done the right thing.

    Stuck oil sump plug

Immortality beats me to it: I won't be. The car would jacked and on the stands. It doesn't have to be that high as Immortality said.

    Stuck oil sump plug

True :) Safer to do the dips then ;)
  35. M

    Stuck oil sump plug

Thanks for your clarification. So you meant be careful not to get my head to hit the front of the car when I push the breaker bar down. haha.......That is called a 'dip', not a chin-up :)

    Stuck oil sump plug

I just wanna make sure that I am not doing anything stupid. the plug is on the left hand side for someone sitting on the driver's seat (looking at the road in front of him). That means that when I jack up the front of the car and I get under the car, when i put the socket and the long breaker...
