You’ll always get some crud on the magnet and on the bottom of the pan but for me the question is what is a normal amount of crud for a given mileage and what is a concerning amount? I can’t answer that as I’ve not rebuild an auto trans

You're progressing along nicely though it does sound like it’s an effort without a hoist  but you gotta watch out for those pesky connectors that try to run away or hide wherever they can:p As a side thought I’d throw up a video on the 1/8” spacing between TC and flex plate in addition to...

What did you do in the shed or garage today

No need to worry about global warming as a hotter climate will be perfect for lizard people :p:p:p

Not an expert but I’ve heard the TC and the flex plate need to have some defined clearance so between them. That way when the TC is brought forward to bolt up to flex plate it’s pulled a little bit (1/8”?) away from the trans pump which helps to avoid premature pump wear if the TC pushes hard...

Buying unregistered interstate, am I missing anything?

Who knows what the rules are in ACT :p So I googled and it seems like the relevant law is the Sale Of Motor Vehicles Act 1977 which is old and seems to predate NEVDIS and PPRS? A quick skim of Part 3 doesn't flag that there are any real differences when a dealer is selling either a registered...

    Things that p*** you off/bug you/annoy you

Not at all surprised. However, it's odd as collecting all paper waste and burnable waste and sending it off to Yallourn Power Station for consumption would probably be much better for the environment than burning brown coal which has 65-67% water content. But the pig headedness of the...

2005 VZ Commodore Lumina automatic transmission.Steering rack for the tie rod end is stripped.

I‘d hate to imagine what may happen if an unconventional repair of a critical safety component failed and one front wheel decided to flop about unrestrained by the tie rod while your son is doing 100kph on a bend  Really, save yourself any potential funeral costs and just buy a new or...

LPG LED stays orange on some starts

Check the google search below then you can click on a supplier near you and call them for the part you need ;) https://www.google.com.au/search?q=lpg+vehcile+parts+supplier+melbourne&ie=UT-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-au&client=safari IIRC legally you can fiddle with the low pressure side but anything...

Buying unregistered interstate, am I missing anything?

If the car is unregistered, I’m not sure what the dealer must legally disclose… So rather than be surprised in a bad way at some later time by what the law doesn’t require the dealer tell you, in such instances, I’d always do my own PPSR check (and pay for the certificate for peace of mind) as...

Yeah, who knows the root cause… maybe over tightening? I’d just be a little cautious if using Loctite and then using a dry torque spec. Doing such will result in over tighten the bolt. You’d need to downgrade the dry spec to a wet spec which is 20% less ;) or so they say

    Things that p*** you off/bug you/annoy you

No need. I‘m sure some do the right thing, and most do the right thing at least on paper. Sadly there have been instances where stuff is just warehoused with no clear path to be recycled. As I said some oddly burst into flames and the storage problem is solved. In other cases, the idea of...

Used TC's are a punt and the higher the mileage the bigger the punt (may be on an logarithmic scale) They can have worn internal clucth and you'd never know or the trans it was bolted to may have pooped itself sending cruddy fluid into the TC and you'd never know. If you actually got to...

    Things that p*** you off/bug you/annoy you

AIUI, coolant is easily recyclable so you'd think there shouldn't be a cash grab from the consumer  Why, I thought engine coolant was somewhat like cooking oil and thus a saleable commodity for businesses. Instead we get a cash grab from the consumer :( Guess the reality is that it's...

    VH Charcoal canister plumbing

    Coolant overflow

As the engine heats up, the coolant expands and the pressure forces some coolant into the overflow bottle. When the engine is shut off, the coolant contracts so it’s drawn back into the radiator by the vacuum that’s created. That’s the breathing FU talked about. It is normal with no coolant lost...

VS commodore Harrop Truetrac LSD 3.7

A TruTrac has just gears inside. There are no clutch packs within. Think of it like a one ratio manual gearbox and gearboxes don't need anything other that the recommended oil. It doesn't need to wear in. What ration was the old diff? What was the RPM @ 100kph with the old diff and the new...

    VH Charcoal canister plumbing

I thought if putting a newer engine in an older car, the principle is that the pollution stuff from the newer engine would need to be back ported to the old chassis  If that's indeed the case then the VH charcole canister on it's own wouldn't cut it as you'd need a sealed fuel tank along...

    VE Cooling System

VF fans first kick in at 82C according to the workshop manual, then they ramp up in speed at a higher temp (that I can’t remember) and/or when ac kicks in…

Seals will fail over time and heat cycles. The rubber/plastic goes hard and then they can’t do their job well as they can’t keep the oil where it’s supposed to be resulting in leaks. Checking how pliable a seal is is reasonably easy. You can lightly push on the seal itself using rounded bit of...

VF 2015 V8 Storm loss of power steering 158K, SERVICE POWER STEERING FAULT

It's a PITA of a job but I'd be physically checking the EPS connector actually has gold pins and thus (in theory) isn't suseptable to EPS assistance failure as that's the definative answer whether you've got a rack that shouldn't have such issues (according to GM/H)... I'd take pictures and...

    My HSV Clubsport

The trans TC housing is a dry area but when the TC is pushed forward and away from the trans fluid pump, it's no longer sealed and fluid will pour out... Guess that's another reason to ensure the TC is pushed back towards the trans when removing the box from the vehicle :p PS: don't worry...

    VE Cooling System

What does the scan tool say about engine coolant temp? If you start the car first thing in the morning after its been sitting all night, the CAN coolant temp data should reflect what the overnight temp was and should steadily rise as the engine heats things up... Fans should automatically kick...

    VF Holden CalaisV 2013

There is always the VF workshop manual in PDF form. Admittedly it takes a while to learn how the manual is structures and where things are so one can manually navigate the broken links but it’s worth getting as it will provide most of what you need and more… In fact the sensor schematics on...

VF 2015 V8 Storm loss of power steering 158K, SERVICE POWER STEERING FAULT

+1 on contact8mg HCC but checking the voltage may not yield meaningful results. South Main Auto YouTube channel had one GM SUV that had intermittent EPS assistance issues which was tracked down to a faulty earth cable (IIRC). and similar from Pine Hollows YouTube channel (which I haven’t...

VF 2015 V8 Storm loss of power steering 158K, SERVICE POWER STEERING FAULT

The cause is a shite EPS system design that GM/Holden tried to resolve cheaply on a number of occasions with varying degrees of success. The best solution was a complete power steering rack replacement but GM/H’s last attempt which was handled via recall was a kit of parts to upgrade the...

    My HSV Clubsport

As a side, how does one check the condition of a used TC considering they are a sealed unit. I‘d think the only way to see the clutch inside them is ok is to cut them open (on a lathe) and inspect the clutch parts along with stator and other parts but then you’d have to re-weld them on a jig of...

Obviously one needs to take what a seller says with a grain of salt. If the trans and TC are located near you, go have a look. If the flex plate and converter aren’t flogged like your exiting hardware, it may be a good option to buy them where you’ll then have your old transmission as a spare to put away. I’m not sure if HSV and Holden 6L80E’s had the same...
