Low-profile car ramp choices for VF

Hi everyone It's been a while since I created this post however I thought I'd update you with the solution I found recently. I ended up purchasing a set of the Stanfred Low Profile Car Ramps from Repco during the recent Boxing Day sales. I picked these up for $252 the pair...

Low-profile car ramp choices for VF

Hi everyone, Just coming back to options for low profile ramps. I'm looking at plastic ramps which are available at Repco and Supercheap. Still a little reluctant to use plastic vs steel but these have some really good reviews and look like they will work with the low clearance on the VF. Does...

Low-profile car ramp choices for VF

Same here Forg, My father told me horror stories of people that had been either killed or seriously injured as a result of placing faith inadequate or at times, home made improvised vehicle supports. I was never allowed to work on a vehicle at home unless it was on stands or ramps and he was...

Low-profile car ramp choices for VF

Well, I managed to find a Repco store that had the Stanfred low-profile ramps in stock so that I could try them out. Fortunately, the staff member who took my call advised that they're unsuitable for VF as he has tried them out on his own cars and said that they aren't low enough. Can't justify...

Low-profile car ramp choices for VF

Thanks Barca, I'd love to buy a set of the extensions however when Repco called Stanfred this week they advised that they are no longer available due to changes in the Australian Standards. I think that's why they now have the low profile ramps available instead.

Low-profile car ramp choices for VF

Wow! I seem to have opened up quite a discussion here! I like a lot of the ideas coming through, especially the scissor lift. Getting back to my original post about the suitability of low profile ramps though, I'm still considering to give the Stanfred low profile ramps a try. It was pointed...

Low-profile car ramp choices for VF

Hi VS 5.0, My tyres are 235 so I guess that rules that option out then :( One of the disappointing that these cars seem to have been designed only to be serviced with dealers/workshops who have a hoist. Having to remove engine covers each time isn't ideal. Anyway, I'll see how I can work...

Low-profile car ramp choices for VF

Thanks Forg, The only issue is that they need to be ordered in and once they're in, I have to purchase them. I called Stanfred and they couldn't advise whether they would work or not. I may have to take a gamble. They're designed for lowered vehicles and neither of our cars are lowered. I'll...

Low-profile car ramp choices for VF

Hi everyone :) I'm looking at purchasing a set of low profile car ramps to do the servicing on my VF Calais and my father's VF SV6. I saw these ramps listed on Repco wesbite...

VT Calais electric seat rocks back and forward. Worn bush ???

Hi Lex, I'm not sure if this will help the back rest of the pivot point is worn or loose but if excessice movement is caused by the base bushes then yes, this will definitely help ;)

VX steering shudder when braking/shock absorber replacement

Thanks Bay 13, Message understood about Pedders... steer clear! Lol :p My father and I checked the car yesterday. He liked underneath while I bounced the front and rear of the car. No noises or loose or work bushes. Driving car forwards and backwards and checked for front torsion bar bush wear...

VX steering shudder when braking/shock absorber replacement

Thanks Mirabucca, I've always used Bendix pads on the car. I prefer a softer pad though so that it doesn't damage the disc. I'd rather wear pads down than keep replacing discs.

VX steering shudder when braking/shock absorber replacement

Thanks Sam_100, I'm going to price OEM rotors through Holden if they're still available. I've always used genuine parts where available but for something like brakes you would think you could trust reputable brand aftermarket components. Otherwise I'll look around to see what other affordable...

VT Calais electric seat rocks back and forward. Worn bush ???

Hi everyone, This is an old thread but today I repaired the passenger seat in my VX Calais and, unlike the time I did the drivers seat, this time... I took some photos! ;) This is how I fixed the issue of the perished rubber seat bushes at the base of the seat frame. Picture below shows the...

V6 Ecotec - Loud click on startup

Thanks Lex, It sounds a bit too loud for the relay but you're right, it could be the solenoid. My father has a brand new starter on his VS which he has just retired so I might swap it over as a starting point in the process of elimination.

V6 Ecotec - Loud click on startup

Hi everyone :) For some time now I've noticed an irregular loud click on startup in my VX V6 Ecotec. It's irregular in the sense that it doesn't occur on every startup and it doesn't matter whether the engine is hot or cold. One theory is that there is a tooth chipped in the flywheel and...

VX steering shudder when braking/shock absorber replacement

Thanks Pollushon, Calipers aren't leaking though and my mechanic told me to leave them alone if they're OK. But again... preventative maintenance. Can you do caliper kits and pistons yourself like the old Holdens? On my HGs I've always done these myself and never had to send calipers in for...

VX steering shudder when braking/shock absorber replacement

I just checked my tyres and perfect pattern on both front tyres. No uneven wear whatsoever. Plenty of tread left too. Just checked front and rear shocks with the simple bounce test. Fronts come back up slowly with no bounce and I can hear the gas compressing which should mean all is OK. Rears...

That's why they're so cheap! OK, point taken, thank you! Definitely doing my own investigation work now. Cheers! ;)

VX steering shudder when braking/shock absorber replacement

Thanks vc commodore, Yes, I think it's the rotors too but the other issue I have must be with suspension so that's why I'm querying about shocks and bushes. I'll have more of a chance over the upcoming break to take a better look at everything and see if I can find the problem myself.

Booked in for early morning 5th January. If I end up going there I'll definitely let you know what the quote is.

VX steering shudder when braking/shock absorber replacement

. Gee! That's more than what people are offering me for the car on Gumtree, lol :p So I may be better off doing the research and examination myself. If I can replace front shocks and bushes then I can handle this. Just the diagnosis is the problem. Because it's not specific and hard to...

VX steering shudder when braking/shock absorber replacement

Thanks Lout, I'm not what you'd call a heavy beaker, I don't tailgate and ride the brakes, lol. But there are times when I've had to hit the pedal hard. I keep a safe distance and brake early. My rotors are clean and consistent with no wear patches like those on the photos. Like Pollushon...

VX steering shudder when braking/shock absorber replacement

Thanks Pollushon, I'm booked in with Pedders to do a check on brakes and suspendion. It's only $28 though which seems a bit cheap for a few hours work. Have you had experience with them? They're a big name and hence that was my first point of call.
  25. VFCalais2017

VX steering shudder when braking/shock absorber replacement

Thanks Heavy VT, Yes, I was considering doing that too because they'll be able to point me in the right direction and check everything over. Not easy with just a trolley jack, ramps and stands! I might call Pedders. Thats the name that springs to mind... pun intended :p Cheers!

VX steering shudder when braking/shock absorber replacement

Hi Heavy VT, No to be honest I can't notice any pulsating through the pedal. Even on previous occasions when I replaced rotors it didn't pulsate. I know what you mean though. We have a vintage vehicle that did that many years ago and what we thought was a poorly machined drum or bent axle...

VX steering shudder when braking/shock absorber replacement

Thanks Lout, Yes when I did the front shocks I replaced the top cushion mounts/bearings. These were all genuine Holden parts too. These were done 120,000kms ago so it might be due for a replacement. Holden shocks are quite expensive though. Are there any good quality alternatives like Monroe...

VX steering shudder when braking/shock absorber replacement

Thanks Pollushon, Sorry, there's so many things I've done to this car that I couldn't list them all in my other post about the idle issue, but yes, I replaced both front wheel bearings/stubs with genuine Holden parts around the 200,000kms mark. The shudder is consistent at the same speeds...

VX steering shudder when braking/shock absorber replacement

Hi everyone :) I've titled this thread accordingly as I'm not sure if it's brakes or suspension or both that are causing my issue. Over the past 6 months I've noticed that my steering wheel shudders and vibrates when braking at high speeds (around 70km/h and upwards). The brakes work...

    VT Series II Intermittent Stalling

Hi ThomasBev, What you're describing is exactly the same problem I was experiencing with my VX Calais in 2018. When driving along, the car would jolt and shudder and try to stall and eventually it did let me down one day. It turned out to be a faulty DFI module. At first the car was only...

Best Oil for VF SV6 24K service?

I agree with you there NJD-1992 I'm a firm believer in preventative maintenance. The same applies to engine coolant. A lot of extended life coolants which claim to last up to 8 years. I don't think it's worth the risk investing your faith in the claims. Every 2 to 3 years at the most...

VX V6 Ecotec - Poor intermittent idle

Engine mounts were done around 200,000kms too as the sump was 1/4 inch off the cross member! I haven't done the O2 sensors or coolant temp sensor but these have been tested and no issues found. Yes, the car is in top condition with nothing to be done on it. See the photo below. I've had it...

VX V6 Ecotec - Poor intermittent idle

Yes that had crossed my mind too. It could just be age but the cars been extremely well maintained. It's more noticeable when cold. When I drove it today, it was around 30 degrees outside and the car seemed to be running smoother. It's funny how it runs better in hot weather or when it's...

Best Oil for VF SV6 24K service?

The Penrite HPR5 is $130 for 10L at Supercheap which is $65 for 5L. I'd need a 10L and 5L to do my car and my dad's car. Does the Penrite HPR5 have the required Dexos 1 specification?

Best Oil for VF SV6 24K service?

Thanks Imoengnr, OK, I was getting mixed search results on AC DELCO oil with some saying Mobil, others saying blended in the Middle East? That's good to know that it's made here. I'll do some research into Penrite and get some pricing. It's the first service I'll be doing on the car and don't...

VX V6 Ecotec - Poor intermittent idle

Thanks Lex, Yes, that what I mean by going back to basics. Sometimes it's the simplest thing causing the issue. I had iridium plugs in the car for around 2000kms but then went back to standard NGK as I thought that might have been the issue. The new NGK plugs aren't that old but maybe need a clean.

Best Oil for VF SV6 24K service?

Thanks Ron (I want to quote Anchorman here, lol :p) I'll take a look at Penrite as well. Thanks for the tip. Mobil 1 is favourable only because I can get a significant staff discount from Ampol.

VX V6 Ecotec - Poor intermittent idle

Thanks Lout, Yes I might try a new fuel filter but it wasn't done that long ago. I've also replaced the fuel pump in the tank and also drained and cleaned the tank at the same time. The tank was spotless inside, no rubbish and the fuel pump again was a preventative maintenance item I did at...

VX V6 Ecotec - Poor intermittent idle

Thanks Lex, All the parts are genuine DELPHI or AC DELCO and purchased from Holden. Most of it would have been preventative maintenance because the old parts, which I've kept, were still good. I've tested the valves/solenoids off the car and they're working fine. I might have to go back to...

VX V6 Ecotec - Poor intermittent idle

Thanks Pollushon, I love the Ecotec motor and this car which is why I don't want to part with it. It's been a daily driver for 11 years and so smooth and comfortable. I bought a brand new VF Calais in 2018 to replace the car because of an ignition issue which no one could resolve. Ended up...
