What octane fuel do you use?

I'm lucky I get best of both in the 86 now. Toyota set up their D4S system on those Subie engines. So I've got direct and port injection. I think a lot of the few ICE engines that come along now will follow. It eliminates the carbon build up but also gives the DI advantages.

What octane fuel do you use?

How do the direct injected engines go with getting gummed up with carbon? I know Subaru DI engines suffer a bit with it. Don't have those issues on my new cars boxer engine as Toyota improved it. I no longer have my old LY7 SV6 though. I wish I could say I miss it but I don't. Sorry guys

What octane fuel do you use?

Really does depend whether the car is modded or not. Most stock will be fine with 91. It's when the cars have timing advanced or higher compression engines (FA20 in the GT86) where you need higher octane to stop any detonation happening.

What octane fuel do you use?

I'm using 98 always now. But I sold my Commodore for a Toyota GT86 now. 20L per 100ks was way too much fuel to and from work in my SV6. So much happier now I've not got a black now

    Loud thermo fan

I've got a similar issue. Found a crack in the ring surround on one of the fans. So when it kicks into high speed with AC it vibrates like hell

Engine rattle and stalls on cold start up

I'm having a similar issue with my VE. Recently had the car in with the boys at RevHigh in Melbourne for new timing chain oil pump and new Cams + tune. Exact same issue been going on since. Yet to check the cam solenoids. But mine could be due to the lumpier Cam also. Have on occasion also...

    Mod Advice

Bit hard to go anything more than 40 with traffic these days. Unless I take the footpaths. Besides having a gear to change limits opportunity to look at the phone or other stuff whilst driving. So many distracted ppl on the road these days

    Mod Advice

Just think the sound on the up shifts is nicer on a manual. I also get bored so it occupies my left hand. I guess I just grew up with circuit racing not drags.

    Mod Advice

I've got Empire extractors and cats on my LY7 engined SV6. Can't complain about them. I'm assuming the rest of their stuff is as decent. If you're planning on getting coilovers or lowered & stiffer suspension. Keep the 18s. Anything bigger with lower profile tyres will make the ride really...

    rim suggestions?

I've got VF 18" rims on my SV6. Went from 19s I've got coilovers so I'm glad for the extra inch in sidewall. Lower the profile tyre the more uncomfortable your ride will be. Don't forget that.
  17. AJS000

What octane fuel do you use?

The octane rating really only is the fuel's anti knock ability. Higher the octane The more advanced the timing etc and the more power you can make. It's why some people get their cars tuned for 98 or so. Meaning they're risking knocking running lower octane ratings.

Ve sv6 exhaust help and tips.

Can't afford what? Reliable? My SV6 has almost 325,000 on it lol Just thinking what to do with it next. Half tempted to overhaul it and turbo. Or do similar to Lotus with Toyota engines and supercharge. Not like I'm in a rush yet. Car handles well, stops well. Now thinking about what...

Ve sv6 exhaust help and tips.

I shall persist. Even if Cams and Crank are eventually replaced. No intention of replacing my V6 with a V8.

Ve sv6 exhaust help and tips.

Why do so many try and make their V6s sound like a V8? I'm of the opinion it's the wrong way to go. It'll never sound like a V8. For one thing the firing order is different. If you've heard the Lotus Exige 430s that's what a decent V6 should sound like. And that's using a effectively V6 from...

    L98 Engine Rebuild

That's where I'm not sure what the clearances are or any other wearing items. Currently 322,000km on the clock. Probably needing overhaul more than anything else. Not bad for a VE with "the" V6.

Advice about bolt ons and the like

I can't see doing cams unless you need to replace timing chain or any cam related components. It's a big job getting it down to that level. Not worth it for a car that's just driven on the road. I need to fix a timing Cover leak. So I'm doing the chains and oil pump & any other worn...

Advice about bolt ons and the like

Unfortunately 200cell cats are illegal too. 400 is the minimum legal amount for the 2007 vintage of mine. Going by the ADR rules anyway. The closer to today's date we get the more tighter the cat rules get. Think it goes to euro 5 or so mid 2010s Given the car is 195kw at the flywheel when...

Advice about bolt ons and the like

I've got 320,000k on my 2007 SV6 with the LY7 V6. I've got manifold spacer, orssom CAI and exhaust. Everything else is just maintenance & fixing leaks. A note on exhausts..... Stop comparing them to a V8 sound. I've heard plenty of V8s that sound like a wet arse too. If you want an awesome...

Alloytec tuning vs 6 spd manual box

Nah mate NA with manifold spacers, don't recall what size but the biggest ones. 25 or 28mm. Only going off the dyno figures anyway not sure how accurate they are. I do know in that region of rpm I'll spin the rears in 2nd in the wet without much effort. I leave the pussy button turned on...

Alloytec tuning vs 6 spd manual box

This is funny reading a 10+ year old post long before Covid. People comparing the 3.8 and Alloytec. You forget the Buick 3.8 was pushrod operated valves. The Alloytec is designed to be a high revving engine being DOHC. Plus the cam phasers are set to operate around 2500/3000 so that's where...

where is the ve fuel filter?

Gosh luckily I think mine might be early enough for rear seat access
  35. AJS000

where is the ve fuel filter?

The 'life' is what the manufacturer considers the warranty period so all VEs need stuff changing that's "life" stated now. Likely need to remove the rear seat to get the filter and pump out.

Is it worth upgrading from an SV6 to a SS?

Sadly 6 months of unemployment from Covid has made money a valuable commodity.

Is it worth upgrading from an SV6 to a SS?

Oh I know lol like fuel $2+ a litre now. Crazy high prices now. Definitely not the time for big capacity petrol cars to be daily driven.

Is it worth upgrading from an SV6 to a SS?

Give me a rear drive Cruze with a 5.0 Holden V8 in. That would be my ultimate. Far better sound and high RPM reliability than the Chev V8s.
  39. AJS000

Is it worth upgrading from an SV6 to a SS?

Nothing wrong with my manual VE SV6. Much better box than the tremec in the SS manuals too. 1:1 in 5th rather than 2 overdrives in the tremec. Plenty of torque between 2500-3500 around 600Nm iirc Rarely ever go full throttle. Before I know it I'm at the speed limit with 50% even. These...

Will VF commodores (non V8 models) go up or down in price next year?

I was just looking online at VE's as I've got an SV6. Can't believe how much are being asked for those even. SS & SV6. Pretty sure my 320,000ks would never fetch those amounts. Even if the engine has enough torque to pull the ears off an elephant
