Timing chain, Valve springs and ballance shaft Q

Ok Just placed another online order with mace for a new roller chain set. it will be my loss with the other one I guess, at least it wasn't a huge outlay. Steve the pic shows everything set to TDC with the "0" keyway used on the drive cog, this was only bolted up to check the fitment it is...

Timing chain, Valve springs and ballance shaft Q

Thanks Steve The box was not sealed, all items are new and look to be correct The chain has about 10mm of hang as you can see in the pic and this relates back to 1.91 mm of cam sprocket backlash on the dial indicator. Is this normal as to me this seems excessive and there is room for a...

Timing chain, Valve springs and ballance shaft Q

Yeh reading through some other threads I am led to believe there are two types one uses a tensioner and one doesn't. However some surfing on the net the JP site only lists one type so does Mace and the romac site is not very informative. I have just placed an order with Mace for 130# Valve...

Timing chain, Valve springs and ballance shaft Q

Hi Guys Another Quick couple of Q's Q1 I got a new unused double row timing chain of good old ebay, it was sold as, and came in, a roller master red label box but the cam gear is marked "JP 5620 Vr-VS" so it is obviously a JP set. Is this normal in a roller master box or has the set...

Timing chain, Valve springs and ballance shaft Q

it runs at 4200rpm max it only did 6000 when the boat got air born some time ago and the prop left the water lol it would clock up about 120 hrs per year and the average life of the chevy boat motors is around 1000 hours so I would expect about the same with this. it handled 4200rpm nicely...

Timing chain, Valve springs and ballance shaft Q

Hi Mace at this stage I still want to keep this engine fairly standard as it behaved well for a boat I just need to stop itself being torn apart and keep it reliable for going offshore. The top end seems to be the first week spot needing attention. However I do have a couple spare engines...

Timing chain, Valve springs and ballance shaft Q

Thanks guys for you thoughts I have just purchased a double rollermaster timing chain and trying to decide what springs I should put with it 105# or 130# ?? also I thought the old OEM springs were already beehive so will I need new retainers to go with them? The cam in this is standard...

Ecotec Motor going into a boat

yep it's just too bad a broken valve spring decided to put a piston into the sump after 10 hrs engine time at and below 4200rpm LOL but it still got us home with 2 hours running on 5 cylinders before the piston let go. Next build will have heavy duty valve springs etc in order to prevent this...

Timing chain, Valve springs and ballance shaft Q

Thanks guys for the replys Here is the recently destroyed engine due to a broken valve spring. There were 3 more busted springs on this engine, however only one valve dropped into the cylinder whilst at 4200rpm. The sump is already modified with a 9 litre capacity and the sump well...

Timing chain, Valve springs and ballance shaft Q

I Have an Ecotec in a boat with several broken valve springs due to the engine revs fairly hard for long periods etc, it's not the first time the standard springs have broken, this time the broken valve dropped in and it has destroyed the engine at only 10 hours old, so lesson learnt and I will...

Ecotec Motor going into a boat

Ok so the BOM got it wrong and the predicted 30-knot winds and 3 meter waves didn’t arrive. So I finally got to do my water test and I must say I was very happy with the results. First off I had an old 19p 3 blade prop on and found the thing didn’t have enough thrust to steer the boat...

Ecotec Motor going into a boat

Ok with the boat motors they need what is called an interrupt switch, which basically kills the motor momentary by shorting the coil to ground. This is to take load of the prop so it will return to neutral. Without the interrupt it is very hard to get the gears to go back to neutral. To achieve...

Ecotec Motor going into a boat

yeh it worked fine on the last motor but it was an old 12 volt ignition with coil and points set up not electronic. I have just purchased a new Tacho off Ebay coming from New Zealand. It's the correct diameter for the hole, is all black face with no extra Gizzmo's on it so will see how it...

Ecotec Motor going into a boat

is there any particular type of tacho that work well on these? the hole I have is 3.5 inch or about 90mm and prefer to find one that doesn't go over about 7000rpm. boat will be set to around 4200rpm full throttle. All the ones I have seen have those stupid shift lights and wanky stuff on...

    Ecotec in boat Tacho question

Bit of help please I know there are 45 million tacho questions out there In the below thread I have fitted an Ecotec into a boat, some may have already seen the thread http://forums.justcommodores.com.au/general/125013-ecotec-motor-going-into-boat.html Trying to run the original...

Bit of help please Trying to run the original Mercruiser Tacho and have connected it to the brown wire that normally sits inside the mudguard when the motor is in a car. However I can't make it work the Mercruiser tacho. The brown wire is good all the way back to the DFI module. The...

Ecotec Motor going into a boat

The ecotec I believe is 170hp, The old motor was a 470 4cyl Mercruiser which was also 170 hp but it was 30 year old technology so a newer 170 hp V6 should perform heaps better. It will definately have better torque, and yes I will have cut back on about 100 to 130 kg of weight. This boat...

Ecotec Motor going into a boat

You are very wrong but partially correct if that makes sense. I always have a giggle when this question comes up. 90% of marine inboard engines for the recreational boat owner are all petrol Mercruiser or Volvo penta's most of which all have the Chevy V8 or V6 or inline 4cyl in them. Only...

Ecotec Motor going into a boat

Well heres a quick Video of it running. Still have heaps to do as I have only done enough wiring to make it start for a test. Had it running for about 1 hour today the only real issue I have noticed so far is that the Starboard Exhaust manifold gets hot at the top much more than the port side...

Ecotec Motor going into a boat

Over the last few days I have been working on the cooling system, and put together a new header tank. Ecotec Motor going into a boat

I didn't think to order a shift plate mechanism when I purchased the new out drive so first of all I modified the old 470 one but wasn't happy with the way it sat, and it was also bulky and had bits on it that the new system did not need, so I decided to fabricate my own so it sits in a nice out...

Ecotec Motor going into a boat

Well with my usual Wednesday off work I got stuck into the boat again today. I had a few issues but they will be sorted out pretty easy First was to fit the transom assembly, it lined up perfect to the old 470 hole and all that was needed was to drill 2 extra bolt holes in the top. I will...

Ecotec Motor going into a boat

Did the final bit to the engine today being the sump and the oil pickup. Because the motor cam from a Commodore the sump well was at the front of the engine and with the motor going in a boat it thought the well and the oil pickup would be better suited at the rear. Wouldn't want the motor...

Ecotec Motor going into a boat

MMMM yes and no LOL The flex plate would have run but remember they also have a heavy torque converter bolted to them which gives added weight. I tested My Hilux with the same engine in it and unbolted the torque converter, it ran and idled ok but it wasn't smooth, the revs also fluctuated...

getting closer now as the motor is all back together nice and fresh. Ecotec Motor going into a boat

Nope the 02 sensors go through the water jacket in a dry place and are totally separated from salt/sea water and will stay dry. The manifold coolant (sea water) then mixes with the exhaust gasses further down the system before exiting with the exhaust. Cheers Andy
