Anyone know the internal diameter of VY auto trans hose ?

Upon inspection today I saw a tiny bit of red radiator coolant sitting on the drivers side intake manifold, so I'd say my problem is definitely those gaskets. Thanks to Immortality here, who directed me towards that. I shall also fit a trans cooler in series with the existing one.

Anyone know the internal diameter of VY auto trans hose ?

^ Ah ! My confession may be bearing fruit ! For a little while now, I have had a small amount of oil collecting in the valley between intakes. It creates a very small amount of "hot, almost burned oil" smell. I was not sure exactly where it was coming from. Recently I carefully tightened down...

Anyone know the internal diameter of VY auto trans hose ?

Erm.....my brain freezes up during Winter (seriously...it's a sleep disorder due to the shorter days), and I absent-mindedly put windscreen washer fluid --a non-foaming detergent--- in the coolant overflow bottle, instead of the washer fluid bottle, then topped it up with water and wondered why...

Anyone know the internal diameter of VY auto trans hose ?

I think a good qualiy new radiator would be more than $ 100, wouldn't it ? (HMMM....just did an Ebay search and they range between 100 and 250 bucks) And don't forget I am not just disconnecting the in-radiator cooler.... I think an external trans cooler is an improvement. Previously I have...

Anyone know the internal diameter of VY auto trans hose ?

Thanks to a few of you for your concern. I need to be doing a trans fluid change soon and shall do it ASAP. From the looks of the radiator, and the fact it has only done 170,000 well-maintained Ks, I feel that it will be okay if I just block off the coolant pipes after fitting an external...

Anyone know the internal diameter of VY auto trans hose ?

No...the radiator looks excellent, and although I suspect that trans oil is going into the coolant, I have been meaning to fit an external cooler for a while, in order to increase the life of the transmission. Heat kills them, and this is Australia which is getting hotter every year. I know...

Anyone know the internal diameter of VY auto trans hose ?

Does anyone know the internal diameter of VY auto trans hose ? I am just about to fit an external cooler due to trans fluid leaking into the coolant, and I want to tee up getting the correct size new hose (I will be using double hose clamps on each connection), and also check if the secondhand...

Misfiring in humid, very damp weather

Lately the weather in Brisbane has been continuously wet. Not a huge amount of rain, but just for a long time so that everything gets thoroughly damp. After sitting unused and __not driven in the rain at all__, my VY started misfiring and although it only has 160,000 Ks, I figured it's time to...

    Simple question about nut size

Hmmm....OK, so what type of Imperial do they use on GM vehicles in the States ? The next size down is 23/32 which is equivalent to 18.26 MM...

    Simple question about nut size

I have a 2004 VY series 2. When I unscrewed the nuts holding my transmission cooler hoses onto the radiator I found that a 19 mm spanner was really quite loose, but an 18 mm was too small to fit. Surely they are not imperial ? I cannot see a comparable size slightly less than 19 mm in a...

    Overfilled auto trans....have I screwed it ?

Thanks for your replies, gentlemen. The problem has been resolved. I drained it OK this morning and put in the correct amount of fluid. Car now drives very well. Must have been foaming caused by the overfill, which apparently happens......I Googled it and implosion causes foaming.....

    Overfilled auto trans....have I screwed it ?

I ran it for about a minute....3 times. I had been wondering about running it dry, but the engine and trans are only idling, so I thought it would be OK. It's not really dry for that short time....there is residual oil lubricating the components. Anyhow, thanks for your answer....I will take it...

    Overfilled auto trans....have I screwed it ?

I have a VY series 2, and today I attempted to change the auto transmission fluid myself. I undid the transmission hose at the bottom of the radiator, put the car in neutral, started the engine and trans oil got pumped out. I put more in, and flushed it out the same way. All good. Then the...

    VY Frequently Asked Questions

I am going to fit an external transmission cooler on my VY, to extend transmission life. Has anyone here done this ? Where would be the best place to mount it, to avoid stone damage but still get good air flow ?

    timing chain rattle?

Wow....my noise sounded so much like pinging or a timing chain that I neglected to check the exhaust. But after banging on it in various places with a rubber mallet I find that there is a lot of rattling noise which is most likely the noise I was hearing.....which is why it disappeared when hot...

    timing chain rattle?

Firstly I'd like to say thankyou to everyone for their input to this problem....it's weighing heavily on my mind. Previously I had not noticed this noise being present during idling, and had only noticed it there during acceleration uphill, but I just sat at some lights and noticed a slight...

    timing chain rattle?

Actually, I just found a loose hose on the inlet side and got all excited about quite possibly finding the source of the problem, but...NO. And after taking it for a spin to listen (rattle still there), I sprayed some "Start Ya Bastard" (pure ether) around the inlet manifold. No change in the...

    timing chain rattle?

Thanks EYY and Wozza...they are both good ideas. Strangely enough, the mechanic's report on the receipt from the last service says that there is a leak in the intake manifold, but doesn't say any more. The only thing that I can think of which fits the symptoms of the noise disappearing when it's...

    timing chain rattle?

Plug gap ? The noise happens whether its on LPG or petrol..... Yes, there is a dash switch, and I believe there is a separate ECU for the LPG...

    timing chain rattle?

I was mistaken....the engine was hot at the time when I filled up with 98, and I went to the shops after that, left it for a little while, then drove home. The rattle seemed to be less, but I think it was wishful thinking. Sorry if I mislead you.

    timing chain rattle?

It has an aftermarket LPG, with additive plumbed in to save the valves. Plug gaps ? I am not sure...but they are newish. I put in 98 octane but no difference, really. Maybe a tiny bit. And the spark plugs are newish.....I saw a mechanic and he said to check them. I'm not sure what the solution...

    timing chain rattle?

I filled the petrol tank with 98 octane and starting up from cold and driving a kilometer, accelerating uphill, the noise has almost completely stopped....so it must have been pinging. I had not used the car on LPG for a while because of a minor issue....I thought the rattle had suddenly got...

    timing chain rattle?

Well, I put in some new oil which is thicker....Valvolene 15-40 Engine Armour, semi-synthetic. But it hasn't affected the noise at all. It really sounds like the timing chain rattling in my old Peugeot, so I am assuming it is not the balance shaft. It rattles on acceleration only. The odd thing...

    timing chain rattle?

^ Good advice....that is actually what a guy in Repco said just yesterday. I will try that. But I now have the dilemma of what to do with my own VY....which is in better condition generally than my wife's. Perhaps I should permanently change to a heavier oil in it too. It is not LPG.
  25. LatinDancer

    timing chain rattle?

The car in question actually has a container of valve-saver fluid which is permanently plumbed into the intake system. I'm not sure what oil is currently in there....we only bought it about 3,000 Ks ago. Difficult to use a stethoscope when the car only makes that noise when it accelerates...

    timing chain rattle?

Thanks for your replies, dudes. I like our VYs a lot....more than any car I have owned. I was told they are the best Holden out there. Balance shaft rattle ? (GROAN). But engines on LPG have far less wear than petrol. If it is that, perhaps a thicker oil will fix it ? The oil and filter are...

    timing chain rattle?

My wife and I both have VY Series 2 Commodores....3.8 litre V6...., both which have around 155,000 Ks on them. My wife's has run on LPG most of its life but now has a rattle that really sounds to me like the timing chain. Of course it may be something else, but that's what my experience with...
