    Snapped thermostat housing bolt

Yeah I definitely changed the thermostat and gasket. I just changed it again last week (18 months later) as it didn't seem to opening soon enough. Turns out the heater tap was cracked so there was an air bubble in the system and I was losing fluid. $45 for a new tap by the way. All good!

    Snapped thermostat housing bolt

I sure did, but in order to do that you need to drill a hole in the bolt first, and the drill bits kept snapping. Finally one of them snapped and welded itself into the bolt. :bomb:

    Snapped thermostat housing bolt

I thought I'd share this little experience I had not long ago when attempting to replace the thermostat in my VS V6. One of the bolts (size M8) snapped off when trying to undo it. After a few hours of trying to extract the half that remained (unsuccessfully... I even managed to 'weld' a drill...

A warning when changing a pulley

Yeah true... it seems the previous owner forgot to grease the shaft before replacing the pulley. Prevention is always better than a cure.

    temp gauge not working

Sounds like the temp sensor has come off. Its' the little plastic rectangle on the end of a wire, just below the thermostat housing. If it is off, just slide it back on and hey presto.

A warning when changing a pulley

Today I was replacing the AC idler pulley (the other flat idler, not the tensioner). I unscrewed the bolt, all good. Then I went to pull the pulley off as it was stuck on. Well, I broke the damn support (the bit behind the pulley with the thread in it). See photo 1, taken after the AC idler...

Costs for a Torque Converter Clutch

Fuel economy will suffer, as it will rev higher and have less power at high speeds.

Costs for a Torque Converter Clutch

Mine does the same on petrol but not gas (strange). I'm not sure how much to fix, but I'm just dealing with it - i.e. not driving on petrol above 80km/h. I guess I'm lucky, but still keen to fix.

    Vibration/Shudder under load

Could be torque converter clutch, mine is having same prob and that's what I was told. Does it only happen above 85km/h? I changed fuel filter, spark plugs and leads and still there...

New leads and plugs cause problems

You might have pulled the EGR exhaust gas recirculation hose out. It's the little black hose that goes into the bottom of the throttle body. mine comes off all the time, and the car chugs like a biggest loser walking up the stairs. It's fiddly to put back... but a long screw driver and maybe...

Loud rumble/vibration in 4th only on petrol

Bad news... the problem remains. I think you guys were right, it's probably the torque converter clutch. I was so hoping you were wrong. I'll have to take it in to get looked at.

Loud rumble/vibration in 4th only on petrol

I've now replaced the leads and so far it seems to have fixed the problem. However, the problem was a bit intermittent (probably should have mentioned that) so I'll give it a few days before I celebrate just yet. Thanks again for the advice. Hopefully I can officially close this one next week.

Loud rumble/vibration in 4th only on petrol

Update: I replaced he spark plugs and the problem is still there... I'll do the leads as I'm told that they could still be bad even with good resistance readings, and what the heck it'll cost me more just to walk in the door of the mechanic so I may as well.

    leak in the radiator

Last year I got 5 quotes, ranging from $150 (Pooraka Radiators, Adelaide) - $241 (Repco). All brand new with plastic side tanks.

    leak in the radiator

Same thing happened to mine last year, I was told to replace the whole radiator. If there's a leak in the RHS then there's a good chance the LHS might not be far behind it. If you do, ring around as prices vary greatly for radiators...

Loud rumble/vibration in 4th only on petrol

Update: the leads are fine. 5 Kohms on the left and 2.5 Kohms on the right... I'll be taking it in for the experts to diagnose/fix this one. EDIT: No actually I'm going to replace the plugs first as they are old...

Loud rumble/vibration in 4th only on petrol

I just spoke to an auto transmission mechanic who suggested to check the spark plug leads... sounds much cheaper, fingers crossed. I'll report back.

Loud rumble/vibration in 4th only on petrol

Thanks guys. I think you might be right hako... a little more research yields this from an unnamed forum: "...a shudder in the transmission when the torque converter lockup clutch engages and disengages... The TC lockup occurs at light throttle just over 90kph in 4th gear." And...

Loud rumble/vibration in 4th only on petrol

I have a dual-fuel VS S2 auto wagon. This problem only occurs when the car is running on petrol... When the speed hits about 80km/h and it kicks into 4th there is a really loud and strong rumble/vibration, possibly coming from the rear end. It's now so bad that it feels like I'm driving over...

    Central Locking not working

Yeah and I guess you should check the rubber window seal so that if/when you fix it, it doesn't happen again. Water could be leaking through. Mine disappeared down into the door at one stage and then rain gets straight in!

    Auto gear lever spring size

Can anybody tell me what size spring (length and diameter) goes in the top of the auto gear lever to apply pressure back onto the 'trigger'? I took mine out a while back because it was broken, but now I can't find it. From memory it was roughly 40mm by 5mm diameter? Cheers!

Right side springs are supposed to be about 1/2" (I think) longer to account for the weight of driver... Sounds like the previous owner may have been on the large side :whistling

    Transmission Service VT

Update: I decided to do my VS first. All went well, except I didn't replace the filter seal as I didn't have enough room under the car to go stuffing around trying to get it out. No visual signs of wear on the old one though.

Hmm I forgot to check back on this one. Thanks for the replies. It turns out they did give me the wrong one. They gave me 92092444 which is grey and has 4 pins. I'll take it back tomorrow. Seriously, ho can you trust if you can't trust a holden spare parts place!!?!

    Transmission Service VT

Probably not quite what Ozzie was after. Not sure how much in labour but I just enquired about a VT transmission service kit - $22 at Bursons (filter, gasket, not sure what else) and 5L new fluid - $30-$35. There's plenty of guides for servicing the tranny around if you're game. I plan to do...

OK the wife's VT comes up with 2 codes. 12 - System Pass (OK) 92 - Low Speed Radiator fan response signal The problem is the thermo fan switches on at startup sometimes (engine cold and A/C off) and stays on. If you turn the car off and on it's all good though. It's a V6, had a new...

    Radiator leaking, side tanks help?

So I took it elsewhere today and the bad news is the radiator was stuffed... So $335 bought me a new VT Series 1 V6 radiator, installed, with engine flush and 2 clamps and a radiator clip. Add that to the $126.50 yesterday and I'm down $460. A far cry from the $150 it cost me to put a new...

    Radiator leaking, side tanks help?

Incidentally, don't ever go to Frank Bria Motors in Hampstead Gardens, SA. He is a crook. He charged $126.50 when my girlfriend's car was towed there yesterday. All they did was test the old thermostat, put a new one in, and top up (not flush) the coolant.... Daylight robbery! :bang...
